Gaggia Anima bean-to-cup has proven to be a solid buy. Removable brew group for easy cleaning (vital - our previous machine, a Jura, had a "cleaning cycle" that left the inside of the machine a breeding ground for mould), readily available water filters (Philips Saeco filters) and brilliant coffee.

Ken swears by his Sage Barista Pro for similar reasons - very easy cleaning. Both around £500

This is what I’ve been looking at , Costco have it for £449. Don’t think I’d bother for another £200 for the touch pro version.

Even using a premium coffee at full retail price such as Illy or Monmouth St Coffee Co, the amount of coffee in a chain coffee shop latte or espresso is about 12g so less about 31p worth. Milk maybe a few more pence. So about 90% of the £3 you pay is overheads. In reality they're purchasing in bulk at wholesale costs, ripping off growers and the real value of the actual coffee you're getting I estimate is more like 7p per cup. Nespresso is no different.

That's an interesting analysis. I roast my own beans from a decent supplier and use about 20g / cup. 1kg green beans costs me £10 so I'm paying about 20p / cup. Not too bad...

1kg intense roasted Douwe Egberts beans cost us £10 at Makro. Use Delonghi Espresso machine and Gaggia burr grinder. Great coffee. Got through two Gaggia espresso machines over many years. Dismantled and replaced parts as necessary.
2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

Delonghi are easy to strip and overhaul, plenty of new and used parts on Ebay etc and "how to" vids online.

Yep I’ve stripped it as much as I can. It’s quite cheap and plastic however was hoping to find a split pipe but no ..

What’s the symptoms?
I have a magnifica s and recently spent around 5 hours tearing mine down to find one O ring about 4mm with a hairline crack in it, now it’s like new!!
Cost under £15 for an entire O ring kit.

No water coming out of the nozzles, steam part works. However the water and coffee mix drops into the waste tank.

Sounds like a clog in the part between the bit there the water pushes through the grounds and the bit where it comes out or the big o rings on the body of that have failed and allowing it to pass by, like piston blow by!

I believe there’s 3 of those, all relatively accessible too. Worth a shot for the money!
What have you got to loose?

I think the big o rings can be done by removing the grey body with the red tabs inside the door and then with that removed you should be able to get to the other on the water heater bit at the top left inside

According to the manual:
“ Coffee does not come out of one or both of the spouts.
The spouts are blocked
Clean the spouts with a toothpick”

How did you get into roasting Mike? I've not gone there yet, but the ability to control my roast as well as beans is very appealing. Is that 20g/cup green or roasted weight?

Buying coffee, even beans, in small amounts isn't very cost effective if you're drinking lots. I buy by the kilo from online suppliers and like to try new beans out; from Lucaffe to Lavazza and sometimes independent roasters but they tend to work out much more expensive and apart from Monmouth Coffee Co I'm rarely impressed by their house blends/roasts. For my daily intake I'm happy with some of the beans Aldi sells which are great value even though sold in 250g.

I honestly can't recall how I got into it - probably just watching too many YouTube videos or the like - and I do it on a small scale with no great science. It's all done in a popcorn maker, 100g at a time for the beans I use, and takes about 3mins per roast.

I buy my beans from Rave Coffee as they're local to me, and only use their single origin Columbian beans. I've tried blending myself but TBH I seem to get the best results by sticking with what I know. Too many variables otherwise!

My calculation was based on 20g (actually 19g is what I aim for) roasted weight so probably a little off as you lose some weight in the roasting process. It does smell incredible but make sure you have a few windows open - it's smokey.

Using a popcorn maker would never have crossed my mind. Very innovative! I drew the line at a plumbed in machine with decent grinder due to the additional (perceived) cost of roasters. If I end up experimenting I'll let you know how I get on. Thumbs Up

Just make sure you get the right type. Good news it's a small investment to have a play Smile
