When using the bellautoservices remote, does the ambient temperature still have to be less than 5 deg' or will it work at any temp.

No. It was 10C yesterday and mine worked the full 30 mins. Therefore a good way to test the FBH in Autumn.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Robbie has one of his excellent guides on how to test your glow plugs here
Having replaced all 6 of mine I can confirm that although they are not easy to replace, they are not impossible, if it helps I have posted some information on how I replaced my glow plugs on this thread
I hope this helps because IMHO I think the fitting of the FBH timer may be great for comfort and convenience but is a bit of a bodge for overcoming glow plug failure as it burns fuel that you do not need to.

FBH full chat burns 1/2 litre per hour, so the advised 30 mins will cost you less than 30 pence.

I also have a cold start problem but have no glow plug light when the ignition is turned on except when the fuse box next to the battery is given gentle tap then all springs to life, I've changed some relays and checked all ground connections and made sure the battery is good.
I have also had an auto electrician look at all the connections and he couldn't find a problem? yet it has cured it for the minute?!
Might be something simple??

I had this exact problem last winter on a very cold morning car was turning over and white smoke but no starting. I switched the ignition on for 8 seconds so the pigs tail light went out and did it 3 times and it started.
I also had the FBH reset and now no problems, although we have not really had very cold weather.D3 HSE ........................Gone!!!

My glow plugs don't want to come out, so I've just purchased a fbh controller from bell autos can't wait for it to arrive, suppose a new battery might be due as its 8 years old lol

Hate to on everyone's chips, but running my FBH for half an hour resulted in the car starting, but wouldn't take throttle for a good 90 secs, due to injectors...My D3 Build Thread

Well my D3 is only spinning over to long when temp drops to 5 or below and is running like a dream glow plugs tested with multi meter & they are very tight so fbh controller should be here by the weekend will post results but if injectors required recon or new mikes ? After all after driving up to ripon & being told what a buetiful D3 I have at 150 k she as hot to deserve a few £s spending on her

I fitted a FBH controller earlier in the year and I fire it up half an hour before starting in the cold mornings. So far so good and not had a problem yet this winter. Also nice having the heater warm immediately

Cold start problem
I've recently acquired a '07 2.7 TDV6 Disco 3. It's been firing fine for the last few days but this morning it won't start. The engine ticks over but cuts out after a second or two. I've seen on here the trick of warming the sensor with hot water/hair dryer, but my model doesn't have the sensor I can see in other peoples posts/videos?
See photos..
Mine is the photo with the green circle showing where the sensor should be compared to a screengrab from a YouTube video.

try heating that sensor. (below the air box)
See the link at the bottom for the location of the sensors on different age cars
