I have a 2005 D3 2.7TDV6 Auto. The other day it wouldn't start, turn over but no joy, got the AA out and had it recovered to Highland 4x4 Centre in Inverness where they couldn't find anything wrong with it but changed the fuel filter. It WAS a cold morning though.
Then it ran fine for 2 weeks, but last night it went down to -5C and same thing, turns over but it will not start, no error messages showing.
I have charged the battery (showing 12.3V when Full) and unclipped the air filter and ran a hairdryer down it to warm air up in case it was the glow plugs but still nada.
Ideas?

I had a problem like that in an old ford escort.
Turned out that while the battery appeared to hold a charge when cranked the voltage dropped to 7v
You could attach a voltmeter while you crank to test

your glow plugs are shot, 2005 they will have deteriorated you will have problems when it gets down to about -5c
its almost impossible to change them without snapping them. and an expensive job.
get your self a remote control for your FBH and start it up 10 mins before you want to start on a cold day.
works a treat and is only cost effective way of resolving.
live in the alps, only way i can start the car on a cold morning

Well it is now above freezing although not by much and I have run hot air down the air pipe, so even if glow plugs are shot it should still have started

if the glow plugs are original, and they probably are they will have deteriorated.
it might be another fault however the information about remote and FBH will always help start when its very cold.
do you get any black smoke when you turn it over? i was worried about hurting the engine as i needed to turn it over on starter for quite some time to start before i fitted remote for FBH.

No black smoke, lots of white smoke if I keep cranking her and a "kerosene" smell which I presume is the FBH?

Kerosene smell is unburned diesel from the engine. FBH will not start until engine is running (unless you have a remote), so doubt it is that. My 05 had four glowplugs replaced in 2012.
I have just fitted a remote FBH so I dont need to worry about glowplugs again in the future. If some fail and can be removed easily that great, but if not, I will just rely upon the remote FBH. Lower cost over long term and much less risk, plus the car will warm quickly when i get inside 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Thank you very much sir, much appreciated I shall certainly look at this, order one and take it from there.
It is supposed to get much warmer by mid-week (well, maybe 10C which is pretty warm for here mid-Dec) so we shall see if it starts then, I shall keep you posted.

Glow plugs as sheer (no pun intended) hit and miss if they come out or are seized in
Some cars they will come out no bother at all, some are seized solid. Won't know until you try. If they don't come out, it's time to look at alternatives
I am due a service in 2k miles. I know I have 3 seized glow plugs. Going to book a Terraclean, and see if that helps any My D3 Build Thread

Are you missing the obvious? a battery showing 12.3 volts at the battery itself when charged is shagged plain and simple.

Not very good but shows how far down your battery could be, roughly 60 percent.
State of Charge Specific Gravity Voltage
12V 6V
100% 1.265 12.7 6.3
75% 1.225 12.4 6.2
50% 1.190 12.2 6.1
25% 1.155 12.0 6.0
Discharged 1.120 11.9 6.0 - See more at: http://www.batterystuff.com/kb/articles/ba...HZ5xi.dpuf

A good battery does help massively with cranking speed (and subsequent starting) but my own D3 would still start at 11.6v My D3 Build Thread
