Absolutely,I know I will not have peace of mind until I change it,I have the pump so going to do it as soon as weather allows.
if your going to change it yourself then do yourself a favour and remove the sump bolt and loosen the filter before you drain the sump thus ensuring most oil is removed
i would also say that when i collected my d4 approved used it was serviced and like you it had black oil the next day and about a ltr overfilled so its worth checking wether they drain the sump or just pump out because they just refill with quantity and prob dont bother to actually check it after so if its not all been removed then that would be an explanationplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

I have never known a diesel where the oil is anything but black after 10 minutes of the engine running after an oil change.MY15 BMW 5 Series Touring

And don’t forget to replace the sump plug before filling with oil don’t ask me how I know It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Couple of things.
I seem to recall reading experiences on this forum that sucking out the oil is every bit as good as draining it, and in some cases people have said better. I spoke to my garage about this recently and they confirmed as much too.
I had a similar experience on a Nissan diesel I had before the Discovery. Oil and filter change and oil black after a 6 mile drive home. The x-trail forum, I was a member of, reckoned that it was to be expected on a diesel. Given the various experiences shared on here, if you do decide to change the oil yourself, do us all a favour and check it again after a short drive and report back on the colour, would you? Of course it now might depend on what’s left in the filter.
By the way my petrol Fiat 500’s oil, on the other hand, stays golden for thousands of miles after a change.
Good luck
CheersGary

I read many years ago that the oil in diesels gets black very quickly because of the soot by product of the combustion of diesel.
The older IDI engines would get black much quicker than the newer direct injection engines so oil change frequencies changed because the direct injection engines were 'cleaner burning' than the old IDI's.
Petrol combustion is generally much cleaner and therefore the oil doesn't get contaminated as quickly and in the past the oil change intervals were longer than diesels.
Of course when you change the oil, i'm sure there's a lot of stuff left clinging to all internal surfaces from the old oil which contaminates the new stuff pretty quickly.
