Does the compressor motor ever seize up?

New post, trying to get some answers. Summary: Took the LR3 to the dealer for new dryer install, which they did yesterday. Dropping it off, the car was level at normal height, amber fault light on, leaking air at blue dryer fitting when the compressor was on.

By the time the car made it home, the back end is up, front end is down, amber fault light on, suspension riding hard, and the compressor will not run.

So, in manually checking it by doing the "Wiggs" relay override to turn the compressor on, all I get is a big spark and nothing. And you can see when the car tries to turn the pump on automatically, the engine kind of bogs down and the lights dim for a second, like the engine is under a big electrical load but the compressor won't start.

So now apparently the motor must be seized, stuck, or burnt out; or maybe the compressor piston has seized or is stuck.

I want to take it all apart myself, nothing to lose now. Can the motor or actual compressor piston housing be purchased separately? Has anyone's motor or piston seized up?

I think it is a new compressor. Sad
You could try to get someone to fix and re-condition but it could be the compressor or the motor.
I have four failed compressors in my office and none have seized, so I think complete failure is rare.

I'm hoping the electric motor seized. There is a shop that specializes in rebuilding electric motors, alternators, etc. Fixing the compressor piston will be more difficult.

Whip the compressor cover off ..unplug the 2 pin plug (redish orange & black leads ) ..connect up a hefty 12v supply direct to the lead from the compressor ( jump leads off the car ideal ) ..see if the compressor runs . That way you are bypasing any of the car connectors / electrical bits . You will then have a deffinate answer if the compressor is working or not .

Big spark, won't run. A friend here says compressors have a valve that releases pressure in the piston head just after running or just before starting, so that they'll be able to start up again. (Almost like how a hydro-locked cylinder won't move). How can I release (any) pressure from the compressor cylinder head?

Thanks
