Can’t believe I have been on here since first D3 in 2005 
No Volvo group discount  but the deals on offer when I brought mine were much better than any from LR, who just seem to want to be order takers on new cars.

Get a D4, with everything that goes with it, they are fabulous for all their many foibles and has been noted many, many times, Land Rover's are far from unique in that regard.
Join the Volvo XCZY90 whatever club and discuss the merits elsewhere if you want to do that.
Personally I'm not very interested in Volvo's, whatever the model, whatever their merits, I come on this forum to read about Land Rover's and specifically Discovery's.
Just my view.

With the last D4 rolling off the production line in 2016, it’s inevitable that they’ll be discussion about younger alternatives.
The D5 is a very different vehicle and for many, myself included, wasn’t the natural replacement for the D4.
I settled for a FFRR, others chose Volvo’s and the ‘new’ Defender is a popular choice.
What we all have in common is a love for the D3/4. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

My opinion is based on being a Land Rover owner for about 6 weeks so take it with a pinch of salt.
Wife’s had two mk2 xc90 t8s for about 6 years now, first a 2017 now a 2022. I really like them and wouldn’t persuade her to swap it for anything else.
I had a 2013 D4 for four weeks and it was great but I wouldn’t pick it over the xc90, I’m now in a JLR D5 and would struggle to pick the xc90 now, I really like the D5, the looks are growing on me but the spec is great along with its capability.

I was at the motor show when they launched the D3 and chauffeurs took us in a fleet of FFRRs to Solihull - a great day I’ll not forget 😎
At the time it was out of my price and we bought a FL2 instead to replace our D2 Metropolis (wish I’d kept it) 😳
I was also invited to the D4 launch and could afford it then but swmbo loved the RRS and I lost 🤣
After that it went downhill unfortunately and I never did get a D4 and always felt I missed out ☹️
A friend has a D5 (he had D4 before) and he loves it - also had no issues with it 😎
I’ve got to know a LR Indy through a caravan group and he thinks I’d be better with a FFRR - he advised avoid 2.0 ingenioum and 3.0 engines - he reckons he sees much less problems with the FF😮
I really like the FFRR but worried about cost to maintain and run one 🤔

Agree when it came out I thought D3 was the dogs wotsits 😎
When I saw the D4 it looked more premium though and I wanted one 😳

My youngest daughter has a 2008 D3. Absolutely love it. She's on a gap year after A Levels so I have it to use  and it's still brilliant
My Defender is very close to the driving experience and position of the D3/4, hence peoples comparisons. It's a great car but I still find the rear door a pain though, but the rest of it is very good. The 3.0l six Ingenium engines also great and there seem to be very few issues reported on the forums and groups.
If the sensible and very capable XC90 isn't you, then there are some good Defenders at dealers that might be worth looking at or as LT says, get a FFRR. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I took the plunge last July and bought myself an early D4 as a 2nd vehicle.
I was (and still am) apprehensive about the amount of technology in the vehicle, my previous 2nd vehicle being a Series Land Rover, but so far my D4 has been fine. It’s done 133,000 miles, and I’ve put about 3500 miles on it over the last year.
I have yet to take it on a really long trip with SWMBO, given that we’re both retired persons, and don’t fancy shivering at the side of a motorway on a dark, cold wet night should it break down, but I’m gradually gaining confidence in the vehicle.
Mine’s a 2010MY D4XS, well enough specced, and I’ve kept around £2000 back to cover the first year’s spares, repairs, and general improvements. I need to get it treated underneath to guard against the tin worm, get the wheels refurbished, get a few scratches and dings addressed, as well as keeping it fully and properly maintained by my LR indie from whom I bought it.
Having said that, I absolutely love my LR Discovery4. I believe it to be one of the finest Land Rovers produced, despite the well-documented faults. If I can get any faults fixed, and I do expect some to develop in a 14 year old luxury vehicle, then I will continue to run my D4 as a classic vehicle, and practice a “rolling restoration” approach.
So that’s my two penny worth. I’m not interested in a D5, I think it’s a retrograde step from the D4. I like the look of the new LWB Defender, but for me any thing that claims to be a genuine working vehicle, just HAS to have a tailgate, not a rear door or a hatchback - style lifting rear door.
Therefore, I am so glad I bought my D4. I’ve loved it from the first drive, I don’t regret buying it (and hope I never do), and I’m looking forward to running it for the remaining years that I am able to drive. If you’ve ever owned one, sold it and missed it, and hanker after another, just go and get one.
You just know there will never be another vehicle with the towering abilities, practicalities, and luxuries of the Land Rover Discovery4. Just keep enough money around to fix the faults!  I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

Swmbo would have a FFRR tomorrow but she doesn’t have to deal with the issues - that’s my job 🙄
She’d also have a D5 or a new Defender - we both have LR running through our veins and it’s been 8 years so the memories have faded of what it was like towards the end 😳
