Hi all,
I've got my Disco 4 in with Glenrands in Liphook.
Details: My gearbox has been playing up and slipping out of gear in Drive, and will only stay in gear in Manual/Sport mode.
Ross from Glenrands has called me to explain the issue is the Control gear shift/lever is broken part number LR021516 (PSA Pic) highlighted. Ross has exhausted all his contacts and has even contacted the gearbox manufacturers in Germany for the part but none to be found and apparently they've stopped making them!
Has anyone experienced this problem? Can anyone help or have this part? They have removed the gearbox and he's explained that it's an easy fix but no one has the part.
PLEASE HELP!!

The slipping out of Drive is usually nothing more than the shift mechanism under the car getting a bit grotty and rusty. It's not very well protected and is mild steel, so they don't last forever. Mine did this and some libera use of grease on it freed it up enough to work. I was struggling at speed, away from home, to keep it in Drive so immediately came off the main road and (being dressed in suit) called the AA to resolve it. The chap who came immediately said it was a broken gearbox and wanted to put it on a flatbed, but I insisted he crawled under to lube it up. It freed it plenty and has stuck in Drive fine since. I'll replace it later in the year.
I'm surprised they say that the lever mechanism is broken. I can't think how you can even get it into Manual/Sport in that event.
My distant diagnosis might be entirely wrong, but just in case watch this one for some background on this very common problem.

EDIT - what year/model D4 do you have? This issue above affects those with a gear lever, not the rotary dial. 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

There is a guy in Wales who I bought a megatronic unit from, he's really helpful and a really top bloke.
I can't find his number, but he has an ebay shop which you can message him on. Unfortunately both mobile and internet are a where he is, but you can send him a message and he will come back to you.
I'm sure he will have the bit you want.
His name is Morgan, and he runs Frongoch Range Rover.
Google it and it will come up, as there's not a lot else down there.

I had this twice with D3s, was easily fixed with no internal work on the transmission (but FIRST time I paid for recovery 'cos the failure SEEMED worse than it was).
The fact you saw symptoms developing gradually suggests it's not breakage (where you'd expect to go from OK to INOPERABLE in one step) but more plausibly a build-up of corrosion, which was the case both times my transmission change lever seized.
Actually, thinking about it, perhaps it WAS only seized but something then broke as workshop tried to resolve ?
Should be a fair number of scrapyards will have the broken part - if it IS broken.

Thanks for all your replies and advice, Glenrands have managed to remove and replace the broken item in the control gear shift/lever. It was unusual and Glenrands I find are pretty good, it was just the part they required that was broken was no longer being manufactured. They are making progress and once she's back on the road ready for a camping trip I will let you all know, more pics attached. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
