BP has officially said they think the oil prices will stay relatively high. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/20...-stay-high

That is the crude price staying what they quote as 'high' ie around USD 75 - which is not as high as USD 125 per barrel but is 50 percent up on the average of USD 50 that it has been for the last four years...... That is still no justification for the pump price being so high. And yes oil traders hedge but that is to keep the price at a relatively stable level and smooth out market fluctuations.

This was an interesting article on the price of fuel https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationan...2016-01-22

“Under normal market conditions, only a fraction of the cost of a litre of petrol ends up in the coffers of fuel retailers. For petrol, at its current average price of £1.04 per litre, just over 72% of the price will go to the exchequer in fuel duty and in Value Added Tax (VAT), leaving only around 28% of ‘wriggle room’ for cutting the price to consumers when the price of crude oil falls.

Since UK fuel duty has been frozen for some time the duty is irrelevant. That still doesn't explain why the pump price is so high at this time.
