Yes the early D4 have/had ali rear calipers and use different pads to the steel/iron ones. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Have a read of Bodsy's brake bible, it tells you all you need to know to replace the brakes front and rear.
I've never ever heard of brake calipers cracking when fitting new discs.
