Cracked screen 500 miles from home

We picked up a chip in the screen at Bristol.. this morning on the m8 it went into a crack 18 inches long...hoping it holds out during our time in bonny Scotland...and until we get home next week..think the old weather is not helping

It should hold out..... I've seen loads of cars in Alberta and B.C. Canada, with cracks right across the screen, and the owners were in no hurry to get screens replaced. Laughing Thumbs Up

I think it will be fine. I did a ski season with my td5 defender windscreen cracked from top to bottom centrally. After 3 hard winter months, I drove back from the Alps to Cornwall via Dover.

Loads of scrapping, defrosting etc and it was fine. Thumbs Up

If it's cracked to the edge, that usually takes the tension out of the crack and prevents it from propagating ( getting bigger ).
If it's not currently at an edge, it soon will be. Big Cry

Should be fine though, it certainly won't fall out. Wink

If it hasn’t reached the edge yet, get the screen dry and paint a little clear nail varnish into the leading edge of the crack.

Had a 'small crack' in pano' roof on SWMBO's last Disco' Sport. Went from about 3" long at point of noticing it to about 48" front-to-back and another 24" or so across the rear. SWMBO was not happy, sure it was going to cave in on her one day but was convinced OK once the sun blind had been closed.

Was a two man few hours job in my car-port one Saturday morning and the Autoglass fitters said it was a £2.5k cost or something......... (company car insurance jobbie)

Seems a bit anal as well as a lot of dosh to get the LR logo windscreen when it’s simply a Pilkington rebranded. Take the Autowindscreen one for goodness sake. Thumbs Up

Need to make sure it’s a proper original spec screen and not a cheaper copy.
Also ensure all A pillar clips and seals replaced
Can’t remember which Insurance co. it was at the time but I had to wait another few days for a LR branded Pilkington screen - which came with the clips and seals (but the branch manager said he always had a stock of them anyway). Was in 2012 so D4 still in warranty, can’t remember if I paid above the policy excess or not - but never had any issues with it, light and rain sensors and heated elements all good
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
Ex D3 and D4

Have you spoken to your insurer directly? Autoglass will always tell you that the insurer won't pay for the Pilkington screen. They'll also tell you that the screen they import from the other side of the world is as good as the genuine article. This is their business model.

It's important to explain that you don't need the LR badge on it, but you want Pilkington because that's what the manufacturer specified when building the car. Thumbs Up
