So is it the same engine in RRS? If so, i would have thought it could be higher failure rates as they have higher power outputs. Is there any common theme, is it more likely on cars that tow a lot or just totally random?

I have done a little reading on this and it suggests engines between 2009 and 2012. Does anyone know more specific details on the dates.

The reason I ask it that I am looking to buy a Disco 4 and would wait uhtil a 2103+ model year one came within my price range if the crank failure issue was sorted by then

And will be interesting to see if it continues in the 3.0 D5s, AIUI it's basically the same engine. Thumbs Up

Happened on a friend’s D5 after 10,000 Miles, so still happening, took 3 weeks for Land Rover to admit liability & sort it. In the end they had to buy the car back from him.

That makes owning one without a warranty a bit of a lottery then.

I wouldn’t mind forking out for a warranty but from what I’ve read (unless anyone can correct me), they only pay out a percentage dependant on the vehicles age?

I know this is an old thread but...

Has any knowledge surfaced about particular engine models that are prone to this failure?

Or is it as previously stated, all models until end of production in 2016?

I have had 4 Land Rovers and I want to get a D4 but scared of this engine issue. Thinking of getting a Land Cruiser. What could change my mind? Smile

That could be a solution but there are no petrol D4's where I am (Iceland). There are petrol V8 D3's however, but I'm looking for a newer car...

If you’re ok with petrol and as you guys drive LHD, what about importing from North America? There are plenty of V8s and SCV6s on sale there.

It appears to be a lottery with (as above) D5’s even snapping cranks.

I know numbers of incidents vs. Global sales is small but the effect must be a real kick in the teeth and wallet.

Only thing (IMO) you can do is ensue oil changes every 6 months with the correct grade to mitigate the potential cause (that’s what I did). Also ensuring engine warmed up and down correctly?

I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly.

I assume its the 3.0 V6 D5, which is the same engine as previous used or............ is it the new 2.0 unit that is fitted causing issues ? Does seem very random and a lottery.
