This is an installer error - it is well know that if the seal is not installed correctly it spits back out. Your mechanic clearly has no idea and overcharges in the extreme.
This follow on issue is your mechanics fault - they should be fixing free of charge.

Name and shame, and then send them a bill telling them that their shoddy workmanship was the problem or see them in court ,

Agree with all comments. It is a shocking amount of money and if you had made a couple of calls / searched on here it would have confirmed this. However hindsight is a wonderful thing. But they did the work, it has leaked and needs re doing. Simples. They sort it at their cost and time. Small claims court for sure, or have a conversation with them about what your next steps will be.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

See the op mentioned APB Independent LR specialists

It is. They are local to me, Independent and have a reasonable reputation on this forum. The initial quote was less, but that was before it all got “complicated” and took a week to do.
I grimaced at the final bill, but thinking it had been installed by a serious LR specialist I hoped it was money well spent.
I’m supposed to be driving down to the Alps in a few weeks and I’m really uncomfortable about the 900 miles each way. I was looking forward to the journey until this.
Based on comments above, I’ll give Worcestershire Trading Standards a call and see what their advice is. £1800 for the work and another £2000 on hire cars, driveway repairs and recovery costs to be met with a shrug of shoulders and a mumbled “sorry (but it wasn’t our fault)” is rubbish.
More comments welcome, and thanks to those that have replied Java Black, Side steps, Window Tint, Painted Bumpers and Arches, Roof and Dash Blue Lights and a Meaty Siren.... lovely!

Try and get the 2nd repair bill refunded. That is a senseable approach to getting money back

To the OP
Perhaps speak to the workshop manager first and explain that the invoice was much more than expected, and much more than other people are quoting such as Disco Mike and others too
He claims things got complex? I would ask why
Re: the oil seal. that is down to them - poor fitment IMHO
As Moo has said, contact the bank or Credit Card company and explain that you have an issue with the quality of the work carried out by the garage

Thks,
Indeed such a shame when u think a garage has a good reputation to then be let down
Also these days with Facebook etc it’s amazing how quickly news can get round, good or bad, as they say takes years to get a good reputation and 5 x mins to ruin
Fingers crossed as the others have said ref chatting with the manager or small claims court they realise it’s there issue and sort it out promptly to ur satisfaction
Hope all goes well

If I said to any of my clients that it is going to cost x, then say it is X plus £1k as it was complicated and took more time than I thought they would laugh in my face. Is what it is ! If you have already paid then I think it will be tough to see any money back. But reputational damage may be served on here.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Certainly you are rather stuck with the first bill
There is a good chance you should get the second bill back

The seal doesn't sit flush with casing as you would expect, once seal is fitted you are supposed to leave it and not rotate crank for something like iirc 7 hours.
I have looked time & time again at the factory workshop manual and nowhere does it mention you have to fit and leave for 7 hours.
Perhaps someone else can confirm this moving forward.

FWIW, I charge less for parts + labour + VAT, than you have been charged for labour alone...
You have had you pants pulled down at that price
However, if they have supplied and fitted an oil pump + seal, and that seal then had an issue, thats their problem to rectify, not yours

Heh! The quote kept growing day by day once they had the car based on the “it’s more complicated than we expected” issue. Still don’t understand.
As an update, sadly they have responded to every email with a blanket “not our fault” and refused to even discuss the oil soaked into my drive or any of the other costs. Such a shame there wasn’t an initial “we feel terrible about all this and the inconvenience - pay for the parts and we will refund the labour on the job we did so badly”..... it would all have been settled. I don’t want them to be out of pocket, but at the same time I don’t see why I should be £3000 down when all this started off as was a belt change.
Anyway, I’ve just sent my last letter offering to discuss through dispute resolution so fingers crossed... but not holding my breath.Java Black, Side steps, Window Tint, Painted Bumpers and Arches, Roof and Dash Blue Lights and a Meaty Siren.... lovely!
