Crankshaft oil seal failure post timing belt

Hi all

2007 car bought in 2019 with 37,000 motorway miles ( 3000 a year used for fortnightly drive from London to Oxford)... mint condition!!

Thinking this car might be a keeper, I am changing the oil every 8,000 and really trying to look after it. However, couldn’t see any evidence of a timing belt change and although the miles are low the age isn’t, so I went to APB Independent LR specialists for that, plus a suspension bush.

They had it a week (they said it was complicated but wouldn’t explain why?), and did the timing belts (and a new oil pump) for a surprisingly high £1800.

Exactly a week later, on the 22nd Dec, I started up on my drive, and hopped out to get something from the boot. As I came back to the drivers door, a massive and rapidly spreading puddle of oil. Literally pouring from the sump cover.

Turned off, and got it recovered to APB. They said they were unable to do anything until after the new year so finally got it looked at yesterday. Apparantly the crankshaft oil seal (genuine) has “popped out”. Wasn’t a dodgy seal and it was fine when they put it in.....?!?!

So, new seal in and that’s that. I’m now £4000 worse off ( they wouldn’t refund any of their £1800, my £350 hire fiesta over Xmas, the recovery or the fact I need my drive resurfacing ).

Has anyone else had a new oil seal “pop out” after a oil pump / belt change?

Does anyone have a view on what I should do about being out of pocket?

Advice, comments, thoughts welcome!!

I can't comment on whether changing the belts and oil pump would cause the crank oil seal to go or not - but I would suspect it is not related.

However....1,800 for belts and oil pump....? That cannot be correct. And there can't be anything "complicated" about it as many folks do it in their driveway.

firstly it sounds expensive - I had the 7year service done plus a new oil pump for significantly less than that at my local Indy.

secondly - they did the work so the responsibilty lies with them and I am sure there are some fairly particular processes to follow when chnging the pump + oil seal aren't there?

Sounds like a call to the local trading standards is in order? Confused
 and theeeeennn......???

The seal has to be changed when the pump is changed.

Very expensive and you shouldn’t have had to pay a second time.

Small claims court ?

New pump comes without a seal, you need a special tool to fit the seal, (you can improvise but you take a chance on it being ripped).

The seal doesn't sit flush with casing as you would expect, once seal is fitted you are supposed to leave it and not rotate crank for something like iirc 7 hours.

If you've had a new pump it has got to have had a new seal, so said seal and work should be covered under warranty

You need to check what make of Oil Pump they have fitted, if it was a genuine LR seal then I would suspect the oil pump is a cheap make, as these are known to spit the oil seal out after a short while.

I have fitted hundreds of New Oil pumps and only ever had one oil seal leak and that was from a cheap Chinese oil pump supplied by the customer, I only fit Fomoc Oil Pumps now.

You was over charged by a £1,000 for the whole job. Its a 3 to 4 hour job.

Flack Thumbs Up

Thanks all so far....

The pump and the seal were LR genuine. When it was taken apart yesterday it was exactly that - spat out. I was met with a shrug of shoulders and a “can’t explain it”...

These are established independent LR specialists which is what is so disappointing.
Just for clarity:

Front offside wheel bearing £193
Anti roll bar bushes £25
Timing belts and bits £285
Oil pump £270
Labour £1008
Computer charge (?) £75

Plus
Recovery £150
Hire car £380
Drive resurface £1200 ?est

Plus my inconvenience not having my car for 21 out of 28 days in total.

My main worry is that it’s going to “spit out” again, not at idle on my drive but at 70mph when the first I will know is an engine seizure?

Please - opinions and thoughts!

Nope - just up on a ramp.

These guys are fairly well known and have been LR indys for 40+ years with good reputation. That’s why I’m asking you guys - was I unlucky or have I been fleeced?

Did they fit the seal correctly? It has to be fitted with a special tool to make sure its at the correct depth after the pump has been fitted.
The new PTFE seals are also supposed to be fitted dry and left for a period after fitting. i dont know why but it may be that the seal has a bonding agent to help hold it into postion.

From a legal point of view either the garage are at fault or the parts, as they supplied both the parts and labour they wouldnt have a leg to stand on in the small claims court.

I had a simular problem that happened on my T5 campervan and i used a free legal surgery run by one my local solicitors to get advice. They then draughted a letter to the dealership explaining there legal responsabilities and after a couple of days the dealer had a completley different attitude towards me.

FWIW, I charge less for parts + labour + VAT, than you have been charged for labour alone...

You have had you pants pulled down at that price

However, if they have supplied and fitted an oil pump + seal, and that seal then had an issue, thats their problem to rectify, not yours
