We have now sorted out what we are going to do for this years holiday (all being well with my mother)
We are going to take the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry and go down through Holland, Belgium and into France where we will have a week in Millau camping (Stayed there last year for a few days and loved it) Then instead of coming back up through France we are going travel down to Pamplona in Spain and then onto Vitoria Gasteiz where we will eventually catch the Bilbao-Portsmouth ferry. We have crossed the Pyrenees a few times but always near Biarritz/San Sebastian on the A63. Does anybody know of any different routes that may be a little more scenic but not too taxing on the old girl (the car not my wife) Has anyone done the Somport tunnel if so how was it ? If we went that way we could stop at Lourdes to fill the cooling system with holy water Also we have managed to swap our original booking for our little MGF to big D3 with roof tent for an extra £40 on the Bilbao ferry which I did not think was too bad. We have now paid £399 one way with outside 2 birth cabin as opposed to £359 with the MGF. Any advice on the crossing of the Pyrenees and camping around that region would be appreciated. Done the Somport tunnel a couple of years ago on a Pyrenees trip. A winding climb from the French side if I remember correctly but all normal roads. Its a contra-flow system so if you have a little bit of a kid in you stand outside and wait for the big bikes and sports cars to come through it (they are always there...) - amazing sound
I found it difficult to find decent camp sites - but that will depend on where exactly you go. Pamplona area will be well served.
I can recommend the detour to Bardenas National Park - Stunning scenery and its a straight forward, flat gravel road around it. Worth it for the views MY2008 D3 - It got me hooked...gone
MY2012 D4 - It kept me hooked...gone
MY2007 D3 - Mid-Life crisis toy continues driving me to bankruptcy...
MY2018 "D5" Si6 - But is it a "true" LR...discuss...but now gone
Back in a D4 with a lot of extras....

Thanks Mr S. What’s the cost to go through it, can you remember ? The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

The Aragnouet-Bielsa Tunnel also in Huesca is quite interesting.
Have a look at the route on both sides.
IIRC the Somport tunnel & the Aragnouet-Bielsa Tunnel are both free, as I believe are the other two tunnels in Huesca; but you need to check. You also need to check your outfit's dimensions & whether you can carry bottled gas, if you have it. All information on the various websites.

Hi Mark
A few years back SWMBO and I drove east to west across the Pyrenees and then came down the east of Andorra, eventually heading to and camping along the Med coast, ending up in Costa Blanca. If you want I can send you a link to the blog and if you like the look of anywhere or any of the campsites went to, I can send you info.
Edit: As a taster, this is the hottest camp site I have ever stayed on in my life

Hi James thanks for that but we are heading towards the Atlantic coast. We have been over the Mountains to Andorra and down to the Med a few times but thought this time we would cross over further west. By the way James the campsite looks great being right next to the beach The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
