CV Boot fail - Replace whole Driveshaft?

Under the car for an oil change I noticed an oily mess above the NSF CV boot. I'm assuming it has split and thrown grease up. Not sure how long it has been like that. I didn't have time to fix before driving to France and now I'll have a 400 mile drive back to UK before getting it fixed. Shall I assume the CV joint will be fritzed due to no grease and so Is it just as easy to replace the whole drive shaft?

It might be ok, as they hold a lot of grease. Jack the wheel up, and move backwards and forwards. There should be no play in it. Mean8ng between the driveshaft and the joint.

The CV joints are easy enough to replace. But probably worth just seeing how much grease is left in - as there is ALOT of grease in them! You will probably get away with just replacing the gaitor, which you have to remove the CV joint anyway.

If you can get some grease and fill it through the split, then clean around the split with degreaser so you can seal it with some silicone or even gaffer tape to stop the grease from coming out . This will get you home and should keep the cv joint from being driven dry.

If you can get a stanley knife, a pair of pliers and a pile of rags you could fit a split boot. your bound to be able to get one in France. Took me an hour to do the other day, I was stunned how strong the glue was once set. Comes with grease and everything usually. Maybe you could buy off Amazon and have delivered? Mine was £14

Hi folks, I’m in a similar position with a small tear in my cv boot that is leaking. Which grease do I pack it with until I can do the job properly with a new boot kit please?

CV Lithium Moly grease is what you need.
If it hasn't all flown out, and you can only get LM- then get some of that in to get you home, it'll be fine.
