What does everyone use for a couple of bikes when towing a caravan at the same time? We're looking at one of these
http://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/bike_racks_car_c...lange.html
but dont know if there's enough clearance for the A frame and jockey wheel etc. I know they do a 300mm extension, and there's variables such as bike size, height of jocket wheel post etc...

They are excellent BUT if you are fitting to a LR Detachable bar and your trailer has an AL-KO or Winterhof friction coupling they will foul the fitting and therefor MAXXRAXX do not recommend their fitting - if you do not believe me send them an e-mail, that is what I did. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

I use a maxxraxx when towing and carrying 4 bikes. I have the 300mm extension and my sterling has an alko hitch.
I have the fixed tow bar and the maxxraxx bracket fits behind the ball with the mounting on the right hand side.
The only problem I have found is that when towing I have to mount the maxxraxx upright the wrong way round so I can then plug my can electrics in!!
Brilliant bit of kit that every d3 owner should have D4 HSE Lux - Santorini, Privacy, RLD Protector

Thanks Thelo3,
any chance of a photograph of your setup?
Ted - I thought that the Maxxraxx wont work with the detachable towball anyway?

There is a special coupling for the LR removable towball which is both extortionately expensive and rather less than a decent fit.
I use the MaxxRaxx with a FFRR for when we take the caravan away but I had to buy the farmer's hitch to get a proper drop plate, and even with that there's quite a few spacers to stop the hitch head fouling.
A great idea, badly implemented, but sadly the only one I've found which will allow towing and carrying at the same time.

It looks like a good rack.
My problem is that my caravan A frame is very short and the caravan will foul the bke, or vice versa on turning.

I swopped my detachable towbar for the fixed multi height one mainly so I could use a MaxxRaxx whilst towing. The rack is good and works well, I can use mine the correct way and still connect the twin electrics and I've had no fouling of the caravan with 4 bikes on, using the 300mm extension. You just have to be mindful when reversing etc.
My comment would be that it all seems a bit 'bitty', with the extension bar, the support straps etc. But it does all go in a bag which is easy for carrying and storage. Overall a decent compromise and well priced.
The upright did sit a bit too close to the rear bumper for my liking (<5mm) but I added a 10mm spacer which has made me happier.
