Cyclists
Not against cyclist as such, and I appreciate that on some wide straight roads (two lanes) it could make sense to ride two abreast so that you're not clobbered as another car passes too close (when another car is travelling in the opposite direction at the same time)... but...
I just don't get it on single track roads. There are loads of single track roads around our house. Largely they're lethal, hidden dips, blind corners blind summits etc. If you're going to be hit by something, it will almost certainly be a 4x4 or a tractor.
So, why do cyclists ride two abreast on them... do they not understand that they'd be killed instantly if someone flew round the corner? They wouldn't stand a chance, or the driver would pull into the ditch. The roads can be quiet for 10-20 mins, then 'bang' someone flies along it.
I don't get the fact that when you're in a hurry (and have been following one for ages to get past - the roads about 10 miles long with no overtaking spots), they'll still insist on cycling up the middle of the road in front and refusing to pull over. If you beep them after a couple of minutes of impatience, you get the finger and a load of abuse.
Just crazy...
The other weekend there was a proper race. There was a lead marshal car, stewards on each corner waving/thanking/apologising for the delay - absolutely no problem with that. Great stuff Other times you get cyclists that pull over as soon as they hear a car
Just the guys out in pairs or on their own that are just incredibly rude. Someone is going to be killed at some point if they continue to cycle like that, and it will be by a "gaz guzzling 4x4 driver".

Our village is in a number of cycle guides and even hosts a midweek race series, all very well organised. At weekends we have the same problem as you John. On Sunday I came over a blind crest on a NSL road to be confronted with 8-10 "veteran" cyclists in a gaggle, using 2/3rds of the road. Now, because I'm local and know this crest is blind I'd already dropped to 30 and was ready to brake, but these guys were taking up more room than a Tesco delivery van (the widest vehicle on the planet if the number of missing wing mirrors in our village is anything to go by). Had to slam on the brakes and put it towards the ditch and all I got was a load of abuse from them. Had I been less familiar with the road and treating the NSL as a target it would have been utter, utter carnage.
I'm a cyclist myself and I've NEVER seen the need to ride like that. They carry on like that and they won't be riding for much longer.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Oh, hang on, the car in question is a 2wd people carrier.
Tragic for the family, made all the more unpleasant by lazy reporters sensationalising things.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

It's them
That's very good, but most apt is the background ad for "Costly Coffee"... oh how true!!
I go with the original post, two abreast on single track roads is lethal if they aren't prepared for oncoming traffic. If you never try, you'll never know...

The irony is that most adult cyclists will be motorists also ! But that's not really ironic is it ? You would expect adult cyclists to drive a car also, therefore irony doesn't really apply, does it ?
Anyway, you know what I mean and I only cycle off-road nowadays, the roads are not pleasant places to be when on a cycle.

We have a similar issue here, but it's horse riders.
One can round a left hand hedged bend to come bumper to ar$e with a horse and its rider.
OK, I'm local, I know what to expect on certain roads.
Also you learn to see the signs i.e. horse muck, straw on the road etc.
But I shudder to think of the near misses when the unknown drive these roads.
These horse riders must have a death wish, either for themselves or for the motorist who may go head to head with another as they brake and swerve to avoid said horses & riders.
And no, theyr'e not just using the road to get access to a bridleway.

Horses actually have precedence over all other road users, but unfortunately don't fare too well against most cars or lorries DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Precedence means eff all when you're in the mortuary. A bit of sense and acceptance of the presence of nearly 20 million motorists might make for a happier life.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

When I come across inconsiderate cyclists I try to be helpful by cooling them down with a liberal coating of screenwash.
I know that they appreciate this because they usually respond by waving and shouting: "Fank you, walker!"
At least I think that's what they say.
And my name isn't Walker.
Strange really.
