I had that problem for a while. Brought it up when handing the Disco in for a service and the guy knew straight away what i was talking about... he mentioned tightening up a cable connected to the gear shift or something like that. (I just drive the thing). Very annoying.
I found it normally happened on first coming to a complete stop after setting out on a journey. Like you said, D disappears from display (replaced by no other symbol), the throttle has the effect of just revving the engine, and a sharp wiggle of the stick is needed to get you going. Seems to be like a faulty or loose connection in the centre console.
Anyway, afterwards I noticed the gear lever to be quite a bit stickier and I haven't had the problem since the service about 6 weeks ago.
