D2 to D3
Had a D2 now thinking of getting a D3.
Just after people’s thoughts really - good move? wish they kept the D2 etc.
Did most of the work on the D2 myself, so hopefully can on the D3.
Thanks in advance. 👍🏻

Very different cars. The D2, pretty much DIY all round, the D3 less so. The 3 will make the 2 feel old and tired. I own a 2 and a 4 and drive a 3 regularly. I don't own a 3...

Had a 2, got a 3 wouldn’t get a 4 after all the broken Crank stories. Hope to keep the D3 for many years as it suits me just fine. Do just as much diy mechanics as I did on the D2 but it is harder to work on in terms of access and complexity.Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

I went from a very nice late plate D2 to a D4. I kept the D2 for a while as I'd put so much time and effort into it I didn't want to part with it and I loved it. They were both sat side by side on the drive and every time I went anywhere I jumped into the D4. They are chalk and cheese. The D2 is stone age by comparison and I soon realised that it just wasn't going to get used enough to warrant keeping it and I reluctantly sold it. I think you'll find that'll be the case with going to a D3 from a D2 - get a good one and you aren't going to miss your D2...

I went from a 2001 TD5 that I'd had for 11 years and loved every minute of owning it, it did everything I asked of it. It had a liking for chewing through air suspension sensors and I got to the stage that I could change one very quickly when they went faulty. Towed with, had dogs in the boot, weans in the boot sometimes at the same time and very rarely did it let me down. Had over 170k miles on it.
I still see it periodically going about its business, so I must have done something right during my ownership.
I didn't get rid of it for any particular reason other than I fancied a chance, I have to say there really is no comparison the D3 is a fantastic beast and a joy to drive, a lot more comfy on those motorway miles and very responsive if you need it, its my 1st auto and I would be loathed to return to manual gearboxes.
I'm hoping to run it for a few years yet, its done over 133kl miles but still going strong, however will be my last LR product as they newer ones for me just don't do it any more.
Good luck in whatever you decide but before making your mind up have a good long test drive of the D3, you won't be disappointed.

If you just own a D2 you will be in blissful ignorance.
And it will just work.
Owning a D3 is an expensive and Rocky road

Had a couple of D2's, loved them all. Still look at D2's with a bit of lust. But having had both D3's and D4's, they are on another level. Do your research, look at a few and get a good one. Look after it, and it will look after you.
Went from a D2 in 2007, had it for six years, spent a lot more on parts in that six years by a long way than I have in the last five, as I’ve only had service costs, but, always got me home though, even when the gearbox went and only had fourth but got me home.

Had a 2000 D2 for about 3 years, currently about 2.5 years into 2009 D3 ownership (both as 'second cars', for work and load-lugging).
Reliability-wise, I've found them to be pretty much on a par - D3 no more or less reliable than D2, it's just that the D2 was a bit more DIY-friendly when things do go awry.
From a driving point of view, though, a very different experience. I do a fair few long journeys, and the D3 is such a nicer place to be when for long periods.

Glad I have seen this as I need to change my D2 and have been unsure what to go for. Torn between D3 and Range Rover but don’t have a massive budget.
The current D2 has been with me for 4 years and is my everyday vehicle so got to make sure I get it right when I change.

had great fun in d2 had more fun in d3...d4 is an experience...the difference is how much more it costs to put right..if you are confident in doing stuff yourself ok go for it....have you tried one...there was a time when you could try one at landrover experience but sadly most have moved on to d5..yuck

I had a D3 for best part of 11 years - cost me next to nothing, 2 alternators, 1 air suspension compressor, bottom wishbones, front bearings, 1 battery and regular servicing which I did myself. I would say the cheapest car I have ever owned from a service requirement.
I sold it to a friend and they have had 2.5 years and spent less than £1k on servicing and parts.
There is no comparison to a D2 from a ride and practicality point of view - take the plunge, unless you want a RRS now that's a different car - another league on the D3
