D3 Auto - Park, Reverse and Drive all stopped working

Just drove to the local shop and on pulling into a parking space felt a bit of a sensation/loss of drive and then realised neither drive, reverse nor park were working in Hi range.
Changing to low range and the off-road option did give me some motion in both reverse and drive but felt a bit odd/a bit laboured.
When in hi range and moving back to park form reverse etc there is a bit of grinding like changing gear with a clutch on a manual car.
Could this be the gear lever seizing or something else?

Is this something easily visible or needing guards etc removed and good access from below?

Put the car in off road height, get someone to start it and run it whilst you safely look at the source of the noise - dont get under the car

Then have them engage drive in high range and slowly try to dive forward or backwards in reverse
Where the driveshaft has failed you will probably see one end spinning (inward side) and possibly the CV boot shredded and leaking - the front driveshaft shown below -

Also you will see the propshaft rotating into the diff where the drive shaft is connected

When you put the car into a mode where it locks the centre diff, then drive is transferred to both ends of the car rather thats why the vehicle can move

Thanks Darrind. Really helpful.
I had a CV boot replaced for MOT recently - not sure if connected or just coincidence.
The car is stranded at the shop - if it drives with diff lock, would it be OK to drive 2km back home or best not to? Aware not ideal to be in permanent diff but would be so much easier having it back home.

2km will be ok if you take it easy.
I would start by looking at the driveshaft that had the boot replaced. As said before put the steering on full lock and watch the drive shaft as someone trys to drive it. It's not so easy if its popped out of the different you need to lay down by the side and watch the propshaft

Just limped home.
Nearside driveshaft seems to have detached from the outboard CV joint by the nearside hub, inside the CV boot.
Will this have broken and need replacing or can it be re-inserted in any way with a cir-clip. Any point investigating as darkness approaches or definitely a garage job?
This is the CV boot that was replaced for MOT 4 weeks ago. Perhaps the play in the shaft and boot damage meant the CV joint was on the way out. Also, the wheel hub also needed replacing on the same corner - again perhaps this will also have damaged the driveshaft prior to replacement?

Do not mess about, get a new shaft, not expensive.
Search on here, can be done on driveway.

Either they didnt use a new retaining clip or it wasnt clipped in after they replaced the cv joint gator. I would challenge the garage that did the work they may give you warranty on there repairs

Just as aja4x4 said, the garage had either re-used an old clip or none at all. All sorted foc, new circlip fitted and back on the road. Luckily had full RAC cover to get the Disco there for free as well.
