Hi,
I have a fairly bad oil leak on front of engine on my D3 2.7 and Ive been told by my local garage that its the front crank case seal.
He says around £450 to do and that will include new timing belt kit. Does this sound right to you guys as I thought the seal could be changed without having to remove /replace the timing belt
Thanks Belts, oil pump casing and water pump by Flack

No its quite a big job to change the front Oil pump seal, needs to be a genuine seal fitted as well.

Had the seal replaced few days ago and when coming out of work yesterday noticed a puddle of oil under the engine pretty much the same place as before. Took it back today and just received a phone call saying they think the oil pump casing may be cracked although waiting for the boss to look on Monday for second opinion??
I had a new one fitted by Flack around 3 yrs ago and it was the new type so I cant understand why that could be> If it is though how much is a new one ?

My local Indy who are well respected and mentioned on here lots, had 2 goes at fitting the seal.
1st time it lasted less than a week, explanation was that there was a batch of faulty genuine seals, that was last year.

I had a wonky batch of OEM seals. Never had an issue with genuine My D3 Build Thread

There is a TSB out for the leaking allen stud on top of the oil pump casing, I would suspect it is this that is leaking, the new type oil pumps do not crack, or they have not fitted the seal with the proper tool.

I fitted a new oil pump and seal 4 months ago that I got from Advanced Factors and I haven’t had a problem.
To avoid damaging the seal lip when sliding it over the end of the crankshaft the new seal came with a plastic sleeve fitted, it’s also important to fit the seal at the correct depth in the oil pump casing, I didn’t have a special tool but used a deep socket very carefully Current:

On the top of the Oil pump is a big allen key blanking stud ( not used on the D3), LR issued a TSB to remove this plug and put some sealent around the threads, they have had some that leak oil through the threads.
The blank is very tight and you need to remove the oil pump to action the TSB, unless your fitting a new Oil pump.
Geoff and I did one last week that had this very problem leaking oil out of the threads.
