If it is there how did that get water in it? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Had a good look at the transmission module.
It is behind the battery:

Looks like it is protected by sealed box, It has a cover with aseal:

However the back of the box is not sealed to the firewall. This would explain the problems if you are in the water for too long.
This is what you find inside:

There are two modules one in front of the other, anyone know what they both are?
The connectors to the top are very exposed, so I coated all the connectors with plasticoat and put back together.
We'll see if it helps next time I get wet.
This unit really should be inside the cabin. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

CaverD3, Is there some form of sealant between the wires enering these two rubber gators and the gators themselves? It might look wasterproof, but if there's no filler inside those gators the water could just pour down in between the wires and into the box...Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

The gators seem to be sealed but if you llok at the top photo the box just sits on the firewall and is has no seal. This is where water will get in. If a jet wash hits just above the box it will force it'self in, hense what the dealer told me.
To seal it would require the box to be unbolted from the firewall and sealed.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Methinks they should be sealed the way the telcos seal the phone connectors in the pit at the front of each property here in Oz, in a big lump of (I think) silicone lube. No doubt I will be smartly corrected on this

Sounds a good idea.

I would only seal the cables with a flexible compound, otherwise the copper wires inside the cables will fatigue and break where the solid water barrier ends. Think of the vibrations caused by corregations.
I think it would also be a good idea to put some packets of desiccant inside with the module to soak up any moisture trapped in the box when you do finally seal it up. The desiccant can be got at any camera shop. Most desiccant changes colour after absorbing moisture, just leave out in the sun to dry it out and reuse it.
I am not sure about that wont corrode terminals if used as a sealant, plummers silicon does I think. I was talking to remote control model boat builders and am sure they had problems using it, but cant remember their solution.

I've waded fairly deep in very brown water and my engine bay is more or less clean - how deep have you been wading and how fast / slow have you been driving ?
(kinda)
When I have gone for a swim, I get crap all over the engine, and use the high pressure cleaner to clean up. After reading this post, I am now just a touch concerned <*(((<<

Wouldn't the amazing WD-40 help?
There IS a series of products LPS-1, LPS-2 and LPS-3. 1 is a WD40-like thin spray, 2 is like light machine oil and 3 is a marine-quality adhesive grease - all in spray cans.
I first came across LPS-1 at an exhibition in 1982. A black and Decker power drill was sprayed, just externally but into all the nooks and crannies, with LPS-1 and switched on. It was then attached to an oscillating cable which dunked it into a glass tank of water, repeatedly at about twice a minute. The drill ran perfectly for two days doing this.
Being a Mountain Rescue exhibition, there were doubters. "Bet you wouldn't hold it whilst it was doing that" came first. "OK" said the salesman, rolled up his sleeve, grabbed the drill and plunged it in, repeatedly pulling the trigger. He lived. "What about salt water" came next. So salt was added. No problem. Salesman declined to hold it in salt water - sensible chap - but it proved something.
The LPS3 is really gooey and unpleasant but is supposed to repel even immersion pressures on bearings e.g. outboard propellers - never tried it...
Just a thought...
A2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

To add my experience ->
did a "U"ie to park
pulled up and stopped on level road, sunny day
when suddenly -
Error messages on screen, big "F" in box where gear is dispalyed , EPB error, yellow Brake symbol on display,
rotating error messages, gear fail, brake fail, ding, ding, ding etc
"limped home" mode with errors displayed
one would expect error log
Nope no log !
If cable connector to ECU [ as described above] is dirty or shaken loose,
this is what happens
it doesn't need to be wet !

Rather than trying to coat connectors I would use a grease IN the connector..

duck oil
We do a bit of cross country, including fording a river, in the Lake District a few times a year (the D3 is a revelation after years of Defenders and Series LRs - effortless almost to the point of being dull).
Periodically my D3 was throwing up codes - most are listed above in the thread - so I went ahead and replaced the transmission case ECU, thinking that the river has probably shorted the ECU. Not a difficult job and took all of 15 mins.
Took me a moment to recover my composure when I switched back on to find the vehicle was now in limp mode - and a moment more of urgent surfing through the Disco3 threads on my phone - before I realised that the new ECU needs to be programmed once it's installed. Limped across to my local garage who couldn't get the programming to 'stick' - kept erasing as soon as the flash was completed. Tried several times but found no fix.
Ended up at the very helpful Grange LR garage at Wootton Bassett, who spent an afternoon tracing the problem to corroded connectors that enter the ECU at the top (the troublesome connectors that are causing the problems in this thread). They only billed me for 30 minutes work. All is now good but I am very keen to find ways to seal the unit. Has anyone of you wise people come up with a definitive solution - and what do you think about using a coat of Swarfega's Duck Oil?
