D3 front arms ALWAYS the rear bush? UPDATED |
|
Hi,
working through a few jobs on my "new to me" 2008 D3 and there is a mark over the lower front arms
Is it Always only the rear hydro-bush that needs replacing or does the ball joint or front bush also fail?
dont want to get both arms complete replaced if it's always the rear bush (£550)
but
dont want to have the rear bush replaced if it could still then have play in the ball joint or front bush (£300)
Symptoms are,
sometimes, slight knock driving over bumps in road,
slight knocking when "Stabbing" front brakes driving forward slowly (the normal front lower arms rear bush)
and
steering wheel wobble when light braking from 50-60 mph but Not consistently and reduces when brake harder
newish front discs and pads not warped with a DTi, evenly worn and pistons, pins move freely,
wheel bearing sound fine and no excess play, had play in a rack end which replaced but no better, wheels swapped front to rear again no real change.
Is it always that rear bush get that changed or replace both arms complete and "should" it cure the wheel wobble.

I went the new arms route ... just as well as we had to destroy the old arms to get them off.
You also - depends on the kit - get the uprated RRS ball-joints.
The adjustment bolts that came with the kit were crap. Maybe get OE bolts? .

if you turn steering wheel to allow enough front tyre exposed to give a good lunging kick, if they're bad you can feel the rear bush move a lot.
if kicking you can see it jump and if you've got a helper you can put hand on the bush.
I've bought 2nd hand arms and got all the relavent parts to swap over and make a new set. On those 2nd hand ones only the rear bushes are bad. They were £25-30 each side but will save me a fortune.
cheers Mikey

The ball joints rarely wear and yes the hydro is the first to go, they split and let the fluid out then its a rapid decline.

On mine rear bushs were so worn they were starting to touch the steel plate either side, more so on the rear plate.
As for wheel wobble, I think you need to look at the wheels/tyres for that.

HI,
there is certainly some movement in the rear bush, you can see it move rocking the wheel, static, by hand at 3 and 9
Not going to change them myself and dont want to spend an extra £250 replacing the full arms if doing the rear bush is all that's really needed
also
dont want to skimp and not long down the line need to replace more if I only get that rear bush changed as alignment and stuff to be done again so false economy, as still have the steering wheel wobble

Id say just the rear bushes are a good shout then. I think with one of those kits the arm just needs dropping and its done in situ

I did mine in situ, marked the camber washers then just dropped the chassis end.
Used a bush press kit and replaced both bushes with Meyle HD and re-used the bolts since we don't have rust issues here and bolts were like new.

I had Disco Mike replace with PU bushes. No noticeable difference in performance or ride though I do expect them to last for an age!

Value for money then Mike - my front lower arm bushes would only normally last 25k, I’ve done that mileage since you fitted them and they’re still going strong!

Be careful where you get tracking work done… some are a bit slap dash and will opt for the ‘that’s near enough’ attitude…
Also not sure if the D3 has to be in ‘tight tolerance’ mode? The D4 certainly does and not all have the ability to put the car into that mode ready for tracking. A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Hi,
had the D3 back for a few days now and done 100 or so miles,
the "stabbing" the brakes knock has now gone
and
the steering wheel wobble braking from 50 has gone
still find it difficult to believe just how much that bush can affect the steering
the ride/steering is much better controlled now
maybe a bit harsher over rough back roads but there is not a lot in it and I am happy with it
Both the front and rear alignment needing adjusting and it now runs true and straight and brakes even
before it went in for the bushes I did find the EPB shoes were
so it had new Discs, Pads and shoes before going in for bushes
