d3 very nearly stuck
Had a bit of a run in with the d3's arch enemy on the weekend; wet grass!
Driving up to Hay Bluff for a walk with wife and kids on single track road with open grazing either side, came across a mondeo coming down and i graciously moved onto the grass verge to let him by, no problems.
100m on another car coming down so again i moved on to the grass to let them by, big mistake! As soon as i left the road i knew i was in the , grass here was really really wet. I would have lost too much momentum trying to steer back to the road so decided to power straight on keeping momentum and basically cut the corner back to tarmac.
Well what a drama, i was completely unprepared not even in the right TR mode, by the time I'd flicked it to GGS i was up to the rims in mud and ground to a halt, TR wasn't helping, it just completely killed power as soon as I tried the throttle
I managed to rock it in reverse and got moving forward slightly but again the TR killed the power it felt like it would move but TR was stopping it so remembering some advice from the forum i turned DSC off and gave it some welly and finally it inched forward until 1 tyre found the edge of the road and managed to scrabble back off the grass
Embarrassingly I've made a right mess of the grass (through an over ambitious act of giving way) and it looks like the Yolo boys have been up there for some off piste action

Took theses pics on the way back when the rain had soaked it some more.
We were very lucky to get out of this mess.

If I'm moving over to do similar in snow I always try & keep 2 wheels on the black stuff, if the other car has to move over into the snow so be it. You were lucky you could cut the corner.

Tyres are Nokian WR SUV 3; a winter tyre with plenty of sipes which are great on ice but clog with fine tilth on the grass so not the best tyre for the job in hand but they do have some chunky tread blocks so was hoping for more traction

Wet grass with very fine mud, the mortal enemies of siped tyres.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
I suffered a similar fate on my way back from laning in Wales today, graciously moved over to the ditch to let an on coming car past, who then took up far more road than they needed to and forced me to take evasive action by going further into the ditch, not a hope of getting back into the icy tarmac, fortunately I wasn't out on my own and I was soon towed back to the black white stuff

I have ATR's and on very wet grass they are useless like must tyres, all you can do is let out a bit of air and hope you get out. Very wet grass (Green Ice) has to be one of the worst things to drive on.Dale

Wet grass is not the worsed. Some years ago we decided to go and have a look at a pickup that was completely stuck in a riverbed [ Algarve]. I had some nasty experiences there in dry riverbeds, so I was on my guard. Thing is ; riverbed is filled with sludge. If the waterlevel drops the top layer hardens out like a crust, almost an eggshell. Imagine what happens when that breaks... But that didn't happen that time. It looked like fine slate, and crossing the bed was fine [far background in the pic]. On the other side there was a gently sloping side with tracks on it from tractors. So I followed that to pass by the pickup to get in line with the back of it. The ropes we had were too short, so I decided to back off from a ridge, about 40cm's high. Big mistake ! The slope was only 30 degrees, towards the bed. It was covered in fine dust, like sooth, but then based on slate. As soon as the rear wheels came down it started sliding. The whole car drifted sideways, even standing still ! Eventually my left frontwheel got in the mud ; I tried to hurry backwards towards a grassy patch. The weight of the engine let the front slip away. There was a hidden step in the bedrock ; the wheel sagged down and I could just open my door..
Story is much longer. It was 47C in the shade and we were with 6 persons and the people in the pickup turned out to be americans on a holiday. We all got out, hours later. A team member of a Paris-Dakar crew winched us out from 300m on ! He kept on the bit were the rocks pointed out from the soil ; lots of grip..
Its almost a scene from Top Gear : the spare car luring in the background..
