D3 not cranking, not starting. Pseudo-random? |
|
Hello!
Well I think I really need help. My D3 (a.k.a. Toni) is a big brick in front of my house.
One fine morning, only a nice "click" accompanied my attempt to start it. The next day, Toni started again, and for a few weeks he randomly (it seems) was willing to make an effort and when we were gone it was still going strong. But I couldn't stop him or else...
For the last 15 days nothing has happened... and every day that passes brings us closer to a decision that I will regret.
I checked the key fobs, changed the battery (the previous one was 8 months old, was functional and charged, but for peace of mind I bought a Bosch AGM), the Denso alternator was 4 months old and the brake pedal contactor, swapped the relays (R18 in particular)... and there is no error message on the dashboard or the IIDTool... Arghh!
Any suggestions would be helpful at this point.
Thanks for your help!
Oli

Hi,
Yes it is the first thing I did. It was quick: the Tool detected none (besides those linked to disconnecting the battery)!
I am quite puzzled to be honest.

If a startermotor goes, this is the first symptom…..
It did find its first “dead” spot…. After a knock or otherwise it will work again, till it finds it’s next “dead spot” this will become more worse in time, so more often…
Since starters are not on the CAN-bus no faultcode generated..
So my best guess from what you discribed…
They are not that expensive though…. Removing it and fitting the new one, will take some swearing and scratches normally
Add on: what is do not read very well, if it is always just a click and no turning of the engine, or does the engine turn, but no firing up?
If the latter, it could be a loose injector(s) (copper gasket(s)) but i recon that will throw up a fault normally Best regards
Harold

Check all your earth straps. Quick way is use jump leads ... battery -ve to engine, engine to body. .

Thank you Hardware,
That's a good idea and would fit the symptoms. Now, I remember hitting the starter on my first car (a renault 12 station wagon that my grandfather gave me)...
If I may ask, which side is the starter on? Can I hit it (gently) to test this possibility? I have an aluminum sump plate plate that will require unbolting, I assume?
Thanks,
Oli

Thank you for the quick reply, Dean,
I apologize but I forgot to tell you that I actually tried this. At different places on the ground and on the engine. I also reset the car with the IDTool and by making a long contact with both battery connectors (battery removed ).
Thank you,
Oli

I realize I wasn't clear. It clicks AND the engine DOES NOT turn. More evidence in favor of the starter going ?
Tony is a 2005 model with 270.000km on it, and the starter has not been replaced yet as much as I know.

Passenger side.. BUT since you can only reach it from underneath..
And if the airsuspension decides it it time to lower the car, (as it does sometimes when there is a fault somewere) it me be your last call!
So don’t do things who can kill you (and aren’t worth the risk) Best regards

Dully noted, Harold.
I assume your passenger side is the same as mine and that your D3 is a continental model
Indeed the beast is on its belly already. I guess I will hope for a strike of luck, and if the engine fires up I will lift the beast... and drive it to my Indy.
Do you reckon I may be able to hit a bit without lifting or taking the sump plate apart?
Cheers,
Oli

Yes LHD..
Although i did a complete body off once, rebuild a TDV6 engine, i did never try to hit a starter with a hammer on a D3
A torch and a look under your car will tell you.. Best regards
