underbody protection

Do not forget that although the tank is plastic, the pump and float chamber is at the front - if you dent the tank guard too much, it may crush/ damage the pump assembly

I think everybody agrees that a sump plate is neccessary and possibly sills.....

But has anybody actually damaged anything else under the car?

The diff is pretty high up under the chassis, I guess it could be damaged if the car dropped onto a rock or similar? But has it actually happened to anyone?

I think the first thing I would protect would be the compressor as I'm very good at missing things with the front, but very good at dumping compressors on the first available rock. (My defence is that the compressor is on the wrong side and just in the right place for me to think I can miss that rock with it.....)
Next is either sill guards (Uncle Ray), or sump guard (Uncle Ray again).

It really is a case of how much you want to spend, and the area of the car you impact with the terrain the most often.

Of course if Father Christmas is reading this list, then its whole body protection please, along with one of the fixes that increases the range of suspension settings, and some really nice rubber wear, and a D4 to hang it all on.....

Yes, the compressor is the first weak point I'd address - having bashed it a few times, I now have a plate made to protect it that I sell over here in Oz. The rock sliders (as shown by RLD) are another must-have if you seriously venture off-road.

Cheers,

Gordon
