| D3 Wont start, any ideas... |

MY55 D3 TDV6... Jumped in it this morning and it just refuses to start, outside temp of -4 at the time 
Last driven a couple of nights ago and was absolutely fine, got home, turned it off, locked it, then this morning it just wont start...
It's happily turning over, voltage is good at 12+, Alternator was new not that long ago, Battery less than 2 years old, plenty of diesel fumes coming out the back on turn over, but it just refuses to go, not even the slightest sign of catching and starting...
Happy to assume the glow plugs are dead but it's now only zero degrees outside and would usually have no problems starting in this kind of temp...
This is my daily driver so it needs sorting ASAP, money no object kind of thing (within reason)
Any ideas... I dont have an IID or a way of testing the FBH...

Sounds like glow-plugs........
You need to get them tested first.
and then go from there, you can fit a unit that will fire the FBH, and preheat the engine, but in my case i didn't want that, so replaced all of my glow-plugs

If you need it starting now, take off the engine cover and pour a few litres of hot water over the engine block and try to start it.
The hot water adds a few degrees to the engine block enough to help it start.
Used this on a few diesels over the years.

Right, time to test the glow plugs...
I'd happily run a FBH remote if i can get one here in a decent amount of time...

I'd try some Diesel Start, that may well allow it to fire a few times and heat the cylinders enough to keep it going.
Best with two people. One cranks it and one squirts the fluid, in short bursts into the air intake. It will take a while as there's a long way to go, air filter, intercooler etc.
Once it's going then stop squirting fluid and see if it goes on its own. It's important to control the amount of fluid to a minimum otherwise you can get detonation which stresses things a tad.
Another way is a really hot hairdryer into the air intake or better still a hot air blower while cranking.

All the plugs are dead, so that answers that one...
Still wont start so now it's time to work on a solution...

The actual plugs themselves are showing no resistance when tested with the method HERE
So i believe that means they are dead dead... lol

Do you mean 'no resistance' or 'open circuit' ? Big difference.
Does the multimeter beep ? That's good.
Very unusual for 6 to go bad simultaneously - has it been getting more and more difficult to start which could be a few glows gone and now the final few have given up.
Get it started with other means of heat like I described previously then, once warmed up try a restart. If it's good that would point to glows. Stew,

Nope, no beep 
It has always been a bit tricky/rough to get going when it's been really cold but then topping the battery off with the CTEK has always solved the problem, it's never been a non starter...
I have a can of easy-start on it's way and once that is in hand if there is any daylight left i'll give it a go, if not then it'll be tomorrow, i guess i'm lucky in the sense that i dont actually NEED to use it until friday morning so have a couple of days to troubleshoot...

Be careful using easy-start they can cause damage. the rough running at start up is probably also due to the heater plugs not working, as they are used if the engine is below a set temperature to assist smooth running.

No drama now though, it's alive, a 2 second squirt of easy start was enough to give it a little kick then it got it's act together....
Turns out my FBH isnt kicking in anyway, it's stone cold :/
Once warmed up it's on the button...

I would not rely on the FBH to be your cold start device.
As said already be careful with the easy start - don't overdo it but it'll get you going 'til you sort the glows.
