D4 Should I ?

Hi, just over here lurking from the D5 site Whistle

Long story shortened, having owned a D3, and fastidiously maintaining, cleaning, pampering it for a good 7 years I felt obliged to swerve the D4 firstly because I thought it was a D3 and secondly the D3 really was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Fast forward to March this year when I bought a D5, the thought of early on set Oil Dilution didn’t enter the equation as I only do Mtwy miles, the only other time I use the car is getting to and from the house to a Mtwy, one of the reasons I thought my D3 lasted so well is because it just went up and down the A1 / M1 /M5 frequently.

So, imagine my surprise then when at 1,700 miles it came up for a service, a gremlin maybe or a glitch ?

No such luck, I’m at 9K miles and it’s due in for a service again for the fourth time, so I’ve rejected it, it’s had the updates, the supposed fixes and it’s still doing it so it’s going back.

The question is ? What do I replace it with and is a D4 a safe bet, my mate laughed at me yesterday when I said I was gonna buy a D4....... engine failure ! Leaks and front arm conking drove him to despair so he thinks I’m crazy !

Do I buy a D4 and accept it is clunky and await premature engine failure or not ?

Any help advice or pointers as always much appreciated !

Buy a 2lt D5, no such problems. Thumbs Up

Happy at Larry with mine plus the service counter stays at the 20k mark and I’ve done 4K miles so far. Very Happy

Go for a very late, low mileage D4 with some JLR warranty - (the devil you know).

Ensure that you extend the warranty before expiry - shop around, but I would opt for WD.

Enjoy your D4.

Only downside with very late D4 is the peewee poor heating system. Having experienced it first hand, it’s one of the reasons my last D4 will most prob be my last LR. D5 is not for me, esp if avoiding the oil dilution fiasco means getting one with the 2.0l engine. Thumbs Up

The Jury’s our on the 2.0 engine, for me at least, I did drive one before I went 3.0 and I know everyone says you can’t tell the difference, the two I drove were different, just like I when I drove the 2019 MY D5 with the 306BHP engine, vastly different to the one I have.

Feels very very active, sumptuous with a vast power output that can be felt positively in normal useage.

D4 has served me well for nearly 6 years. The engine risk issue exists, but I don’t let it bother me. If it goes it goes. It would still cost me a lot more to replace the D4 than I would lose if the engine died.

There are some very nice early D3’s around, good spec, for not much money now. Lot of car for the money!

I've had a D4 for the last 6 months, had a pathfinder for 12 years before that. The D4 has given me more problems already than the old Nissan did in all 12 years. I will get it all sorted but something tells me it's a long and slippery slope. But if you like doubt?

Well I replaced my 2016 Landmark D4, after it was smashed up in 2017, with a used 2016 Landmark D4.
The D5 isn't for me, sadly. Thumbs Up

It’s a fantastic vehicle, don’t get me wrong... if it wasn’t for the early service I’d be keeping it, I’ve toyed with a 2019 MY twin turbo but I don’t know, there’s something about the D5 that’s just too clinical in its useage.

I’m used to DEFENDER and the olde faithfull D3, I could just do with something to tie me over till the new DEFENDER breaks cover.

I trust you guys as a lot have been about Disco’s for years and we all forged that D3 path when no one liked them 😂

I like the fact I can jump in the D5 and it goes without any moans or groans. The 2lt with a 240hp engine is as quick or quicker than the D4 3lt. Thumbs Up

The 2.0l engine in the D5 is really impressive, although I've never driven it fully laden or towing.

I much prefer the EU6 D4 engines though, for some reason they feel faster than the previous EU5 engines

I dont need it to be quick, it's the wrong vehicle to be quick for me, I went 3.0 for the drivability, the 2.0 for was gutless in the D5 and lacked that bit of torque that props the upper end of the driveability for me.

Point taken and I also don’t need the D4 to be fast. The EU6 D4 does feel more powerful though. Thumbs Up

If I was in your position I think I’d be looking elsewhere. The D5 does nowt for me at all, just lacks the initial wow that the D3 and D4 gave me over the last 12 years. I’ve driven 2 and 3 litre versions and the bigger engine is more suited to the D5 without a doubt.
My 2016 D4 Landmark is superb in every way but in all honesty it’s starting to look dated and I worry about what to do when the LR warranty expires next summer.
The initial, plan was to keep the D4/for 5 years but as the family grow up it’s now a lot bigger than we need if I’m honest along with the 6 berth tintent for 3 of us Sad
XC60 possibly next July, sad to say as I’ve had Land Rovers for a good amount of my 39 years driving.

3 D4's here
1st 2 little niggle probs, no big issues though.
Last Landmark perfect in my ownership.
Sad to see it go, seems a fair few on here bought last model run but the past couple of months seems to of seen many, including myself selling up and moving on, mainly it seems to other brands.
Perhaps we are all getting older, life changes etc, perhaps

boredom of driving similar vehicle over the yrs.
However Dicoveries used to provide fairly cheap motoring after 3 years, reliable engines, cheap servicing, cheap parts, fairly cheap insurance, even tyres lot cheaper to being a lot more popular available sizes.
I think it depends more on what type of person you are, the thought of engine failure, no warranty or having to fight to get it repaired definitely put me off going past 3 yrs with Landmark.
When making decisions felt it was important that whatever new car had to be euro 6 compliant for diesel, seeing the extent of London's new LEZ and the amount they predict to be taking in, plus other towns cities looking to go down this route both here in UK and Europe, anything less than euro 6 could become very expensive to run and next worthless in a couple of years
