D4 20" 109 rating

Just seen the D4 with 20" OEM wheels. The tyres are 255/50 109 rated. I guess 109 would be OK for the D3 then.

England

in theory, 109 has always been OK, as this is whats spec'd for the OZ D3, but LR already had a 19" tyre in use in the UK, that being a 255/55/19 111, in use on the FFRR, so went with that for the D3. Same seems to be true for the 20", as this (255/50x20) is what's used on the FFRR.

There is another reason why 255/55/19's are 111 or higher and its the same why 255 /50/20's have a lower load index Whistle

LR require 112 rated tyres in UK == 1120kg, (and 109 in Australia == 1030kg), yet the 18" (and probably other sized) wheels are only rated at 940kg. Looking at the Oz figure in isolation - you could argue that excessive heat would play a part in LR demanding a higher rated tyre than wheel. Not sure about the UK though... maybe they know how fast you guys really drive over there? Laughing

LR don’t require promise its convenient thats all 255-55-19 are not just made for LR there are plenty of marques out there in this size so it could be a one for all solution where as the cars requiring 20’s might not be as heavy so the 20’s can be made to a lower load index to cover those bases. I do know that a few cars on the 19's that require this load index dont offer a 20" solution
Remember your wheel is only rated at 940 ish so the tyre is only as good as the wheel, just because the tyre is 1000kgs it dont magic the wheel to 1000kgs as well.

Its a bit like fishing low line weight with a big hook the line is still gonna break

common sense should prevail
