D4, 2015 -towing socket query |
|
Evening all
Just about to buy my first Discovery 4, and am looking to tow a caravan with it. I note there's the removable towbar and a 13-pin socket on the one I'm looking at. Can anyone confirm if this arrangement will keep the fridge running in the caravan while I'm on the road?
Also, downloaded the D4 manual, and this section was in it:
Quote:The vehicle connector provides a 5 amp output, which must not be exceeded. If it is required to exceed 5 amps, a 12S and a 13 pin accessory harness kit is available from your Land Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer, increasing the output to 15 amps.
Is this necessary for what I'm aiming to do, or is that single 13-pin up for the job?
Thanks for any advice![/quote]

As long as it is a 13 pin and fitted correctly then yes it will have the 12v maintained power for fridge Etc.
Cheers

Many on here will advise you get a fixed tow bar if doing anything other than occasional light towing. .

Thanks Andy
Shouldn't be anything too excessive, HW17... possibly a Massey Ferguson 35X once or twice a year (weight ~1440kg + trailer) and a typical double-axle caravan, around 16-1700kg.
Removable towbar is rated for 3500kg I believe, so I'm around the halfway mark..?

I tow a single axle caravan with a mlptm of just under 1700kg. Mines a fixed towbar as it was already fitted but we also tow it with my wife’s car which has a removable towball.
I think it’s like everythinv in life. Maintain the hitch make sure the socket for the hitch is clean and maintained and then make sure it is inserted correctly and locked in everytime you use it. Other thing is just to make sure you have a sensible nose weight do all that and it should be fine.

i tow a big 8 mtr twin axle on the detachable bar with no issues and have done for the last 6 years with 3 different discoveries all the same
just be aware of any excessive play in the socket over time but if its a good fit no worries .
if your in any doubt tho the tow trust option is the less ugly option and looks a good piece of kit
there will be someone alone with a tale of woe any minute but the removable is more than up to the job imo . and as for the car well it is without doubt the best towing car on the road bar none MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car
MY10 HSE D4 auto
MY14 XXV more buttons than the spaceshuttle

On my dometic caravan fridge I just have to select car option, it also has option for gas or running off the mains( obviously when on site).

Is 13 pin the new or old stuff?
Had 7 pin on the FL2, fitted 2018.
The e-bike carrier I bought in Dec 18 is 7 pin.
Just picked up a trailer yesterday and that's also 7 pin.
But the MY14 D4 I bought a few weeks ago is 13 pin.
So what is the way forward ..... 13 or 7 ? ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I believe that 13 pin is the new way and is now the standard?? You can get adaptors to go either way.
