D4 Air Suspension - Maintenance

I know I will be ribbed for asking this question; and it will be pointed out that I am obsessive about (preventative) maintenance - so be it Whistle

I can't see any reference to maintenance of the D4's air suspension in JLR schedules, maybe I have missed it?

I have however noticed that it has been suggested that the suspension benefits from maintenance, in particular:-

1. Changing the desiccant and filters; and

2. Maintaining/servicing the compressor.

At what mileage/age should this be done, and what is involved in 2 above?

TIA

HNY to you.

I cannot assist on 1. but in terms of 2., the compressor, mine has just failed and been replaced at 8 years 6 months old and 80k miles. Moderate use of suspension and average to above average towing usage.

Therefore I think servicing the compressor before then might help to give your timescale some context. What needs doing with a compressor service is something for others.

Wasn't a cheap item but WD (old one) made it bearable..

Thanks Jim Thumbs Up

Hopefully someone will be able to advise on (preventative) maintenance Whistle

I am surprised that there appear to be no JLR recommendations.

Nige, i know that you use your D4 off road. I used to take off the compressor covers and clear out all the muck.

The noise/vibration deadening material is sponge like and seems to be almost permanently wet. Which apparently is nothing to worry about.

If you haven’t done this, you might find a surprisingly large amount of mud/dirt.

Thanks Tom

I tend to do as you suggest in the Summer, when it's warmer to work under one's car Embarassed

I am surprised that no one has any other ideas for routine maintenance, or suggestions at what mileage/age one should change the desiccant and filters.

Must confess like ur good self the only thing I found was the following from the workshop manual

Air Suspension

1. Every 5 years or 75,000 miles (120,000 km) - Vehicles operating under arduous conditions: Replace air suspension compressor filter. For additional information, refer to Air Suspension Air Filter (204-05 )

So I wonder if the dryers desiccant should be replaced/ checked every 2-3 years or with the gaps iid live data if monitoring the air compressors motor temperature along with the air compressors pressure as I would assume as the desiccant material becomes blocked the motor temperature would rise and air pressure reduced

Apologises as know that’s not really much help

Ps, think the data is for a hitachi compressor

Had to replace my drier about 2 years ago, so circa 120k miles and 10 years old, due to repeated suspension faults coming up.

As suspected there was a crack in the cap on the top of the drier unit between the two air lines. I bought a second hand 'donor' unit from a scrapyard and a refurbishment kit online then rebuilt the donor drier unit with new filters and desiccant before doing a simple swap over. Desiccant was all clumpy and had degraded so clearly due for replacement.

Still got the rest of the donor unit and all the parts to refurbish the pump itself but so far not required them 🤞

From my investigations no routine checks or preventative maintenance possible hence not detailed by LR;

AMK type
The main issue is piston ring wear. Over time wear in the ring reduces the ability to compress air in the chamber. It becomes less efficient with use and so has to work harder, which speeds up wear.... They can be changed put is a repair.
The only other item of wear are the motor bushes. Last a long time but again no routine action possible. Replace when worn out.

Hitachi type
No experience with this type but I’m saying it is the same situation as the AMK
