D4 broken down (25/03/19)

For the first time in 2 years of happy ownership, my 2010 Disco 4 let me down. I was returning from a long trip down to Salisbury from Cambridge and while on the A1, it suddenly lost all power. I drove over to the hard shoulder and it stopped. I tried to get it started again but it wouldn’t, giving me an error message about low battery and low fuel. After it had been recovered I got some diesel and filled it up again and as I was trying to start it again I noticed a massive fuel leak under a cover just in front of the tank. So it obviously has a fuel leak but I’m wondering why the battery is also showing as low given I’d just done a long trip. Any ideas and are there any common places for a fuel leak. I only had it serviced in January at a LR dealer. Recovery guy said it could be the fuel pump. Hope not as that sounds expensive.

Fuel filter is under a panel at the front of the tank, drivers side.

Interesting. I wonder if they changed that during the service. I’ll check.

might be as simple as the spin on filter has spun off. Not sure why it would cause a flat battery though?

I think when there's a fault, the display may well give you the actual cause and, it seems, produce another one or two, just to be sociable. The weird and wonderful messages you get when you do actually have a dodgy battery are legendary. Hopefully, sort the fuel leak problem and all will be well. Perhaps you flattened the battery somewhat when trying to start it again?

It's possible. It's currently with the dealer who I had it serviced with last month. They've yet to look at it yet though. I'm strongly suspecting the fuel filter wasn't put on properly but I'll wait to see what they're explanation is. I'd be amazed if such a massive fuel leak could occur within 6 weeks of them having serviced it without something not done correctly during the service.

Same happened to me, car dumped diesel all around the M25, incorrectly fitted filter, I think its plastic and if you over tighten it will do this. Mine did it a few weeks after its service....made a mess of the underside of the car too!

Did you get any come back on this? I've just had a phone call from LR who are blaming it on a faulty fuel sensor which they have replaced along with the fuel filter. I don't see how a sensor can cause a massive fuel leak though!!?? I asked her this question and she said that she will get a technician to call me tomorrow to explain. Surely a faulty fuel sensor can't cause a fuel leak??

The fuel sensor from memory screws into the bottom of the fuel filter.

Again from memory the fuel filter is meatball but the housing it screws onto is plastic as is the fuel sensor.

So there’s no way a faulty sensor alone could cause a scenario where diesel is pouring out of the car?

Well if it had gone faulty as in cracked then diesel is going to come out of the bottom of the filter.

Given it has just had a service if they replaced the fuel filter perhaps the act of removing and replacing it has made the plastic give up the ghost.

Last time I looked it was actually cheaper to buy a complete kit including the fuel filter housing rather than just the filter and sensor.

OK thanks. Cracking is a possibility I guess but I would be surprised if the level of degradation for it to crack a month later wasn’t noticed at the service.

Defo fitted wrong by over tightening, my car was done by a local chap I use and he sorted it all out no cost to me and jet washed the underneath of the car, least he could do really but still he dealt with it well.

D4s are prone to having an issue with the fuel filter housing, but I think its purely down to the sensor. The sensor tends to play up, which results in intermittent reduced performance warnings.

If its dropped diesel, and its just been serviced, you need to get eyes on to see exactly what part is causing the issue. If filter, it should have 2 years warranty if LR. If its a fitting error, then the garage should sort it. If its just split, it will be hard to prove, but I expect its been damaged during the service.

Finally got the Disco back. They claimed it was a faulty fuel sensor and replaced the filter and sensor free of charge. They did however refuse to reimburse me for the recovery fee to take the car to them which I wasn’t happy about. The service manager said that it could be the part failed or it was fitted wrongly (which I strongly suspect) and that if the part failed that they weren’t liable for anything more than refitting a replacement part. I didn’t even mention compensation for being stranded on the hard shoulder of a motorway for an hour after the engine losing power, being without the car for 5 days and the cleaning of big pools of diesel on my drive and my road. I shall be taking this further.

On another issue it looked like the service performed last time was an A even though I paid for a B. The receipt was for a B (more comprehensive) yet the service ticksheet signed by the technician clearly said A was done. A doesn’t include replacing the fuel filter so my suspicion was that by mistake A had been carried out. The servicing guy claimed it was definitely B that was done and when they took the fuel filter off it looked new but I only have their word for that. To rectify they’re going to check the additional things for a B and redo the checklist but it does make me wonder...
