D4 broken cranks

Hi all

You don’t have to look very far down a good search for “Land Rover Discovery” before you see stories of broken cranks.

My question is does this only affect certain years / engines.

I have a 2016 D4 Graphite hat is now out of warranty, should I be concerned and look for an extended warranty, and if so, any recommendations on where to go for one.

Regards

Dorian.

Ye you are at risk.

Even the 3.0 that they fit to brand new cars are at risk.

Having had a D3 that was a brilliant car and maintained to lots of expense was really disappointed to see the shells spin and the car almost worthless. Would love a D4 but having the previous reliability issues and reading about the crank issues it just puts me off. I have a VW at the moment and it’s bombproof.
Why can’t Landrover build to the same quality

VW have their fair share of engine issues too. Its just that a crank failure in a JLR product is a huge expense...

Thanks for the info. Will take a look at WD.
What I don’t get is this issue seems to have been going for ages why has it not been sorted?

Because it’s cheaper for JLR to ignore it, just remember they have a long history of doing so going back to the Freelander1 petrol engine which nearly ruined them with claims, nearly 50% of them failed before 40k miles and they still continued to fit them until the F2 was launched.
My theory is the problem is not mechanical but electronics and is caused by static electric corrupting the ecu software and causing an injector to fire before the piston has reached TDC, I stand to be proved wrong. Bow down

Its a 2011 with 101k miles on it when it broke.

Not from a LR dealer and yes it does have FSH, mainly indys with a few LR dealer services.

No warnings, was running perfectly until the second it just cut out and seized solid. It was a snapped crank.

For info, mileage, service history and age make no difference. Some brand new vehicles straight off the transporter are rumoured to have given up the ghost. Folks on here generally maintain their vehicles to a high standard because they have an interest in the vehicles and they have been given a dose of bad luck every now and then (me included). Others have gone on for 200k+.

It's luck of the draw, pure and simple.
