D4 DIY auto box flush

Having failed to find a decent local garage to do an ATF flush on my 90K D4, I decided to tackle it myself using an 8L pressurised sprayer and some 1/2" tube Very Happy .
The flushing connections are easy on a D4, via the transmission cooler near the front diff. I just removed the left connection, which is the return line back to the transmission....

The 1/2" tube will push onto the cooler outlet, and the fresh fluid can be pumped in via a suitable tube inserted into the quick release connection.

Running the engine for 10 seconds produced about 2 litres of old ATF so it comes out pretty fast! I then pumped 2 litres of new ATF in, with the engine stopped. Repeating this a few times, each time allowing 2-3 litres of old fluid to pump out into my bucket, and replacing the same amount with fresh fluid from the pressurised pump.



After about 13 litres the fluid being pumped out was fairly clear, so I reconnected the transmission pipe to the cooler, and checked the level in the box.

The level plug is easy to find on the right side of the auto box, and you have to have the engine running to check it. With an IR thermometer to check the ATF temperature, replace the level plug when the fluid is just dripping out at a fluid temp of 40 deg C.

Good job Thumbs Up I followed a similar process when flushing the auto box on the D3 but I performed a drain and refill before tapping into the cooler lines.

Do you have the make/model of the pump you're using?

Hi Bud what Oil did you use as the oil level plug looks like you have used old ATF fluid, instead of the new standard oil.?

I think that's just the reflection from the IR temperature sensor.

I see what you mean now Flack, yes that's the red laser dot from the thermometer Thumbs Up . The fluid that came out wasn't too bad, smelt the same as the new stuff, just a bit darker. I flushed it using the finest Meyle ATF Plus 6 from Advanced Factors, very nice price and super fast delivery Thumbs Up

I forgot to mention in the original post, I also added a tube of Dr Tranny during the final litre of flushing, just for good measure Very Happy

Sorry to bring back such an old thread but it's a very useful one!

I appreciate the OP specifies a 14mm OD pipe to push into the quick connector, but I don't have any. Would a 15mm copper plumbing pipe work?

Or instead, could I simply use the right hand connector and catch the fluid coming from the transmission via the quick connector and push the fresh fluid through the cooler using a hose attached directly to the cooler?

In case anyone comes across this in the future...

It is possible to use the right hand quick connector to drain into a container and push the new fluid through the cooler and onwards toward the transmission. I did this today and all you need is a small length of garden hose, a pressure sprayer and a few jubilee clips to make the hose connections tight.

@KNWatkins: I flush the D4 as per your suggestion. Remove oil by attaching a hose to the LH oil cooler pipe and fill through the RH pipe (as seen from the front of the car). Remove the LH quick-connector, attach draining hose and drain the system. Reconnect LH quick-connector and remove RH quick-connector. Fill system through a hose you attach to the RH oil cooler pipe. Don't forget to add 2 tubes of Shudder Fixx to the final filling of the system Thumbs Up

Why would you add shudder fix or Dr Tranny to a transmission which is operating correctly?
