Why does my D4 feel a horrid drive at cruising speed?

Just picked the car up from the garage, after returning it due to a vibration / imbalance form the engine at motorway speeds when under drive.

The rear prop has been changed, the front wheels replaced & balance a couple of times, one of the engine mounts has also been replaced as this failed the vacuum test.

I can only describe the engine as sounding rough, almost as though it's misfiring slightly or there is an imbalance somewhere. This starts around 70 & gets worse as speed increases. As soon as you take your foot off the throttle this vibration / imbalance / misfire goes away. It's proving really difficult to describe to the dealer. All I can say is I'd expect the car to purr along at motorway speed, like my D3 did, however I can imagine the assault on the senses from this vibration on extended journeys would be somewhat distracting.

Anybody experienced anything similar? Don't get me wrong, the dealer has been great to date I'm just looking for other opinions / options to find the cause as the garage certainly feel the drivetrain suspension, mounts etc are all good.

What do my learned friends here think?

I have seen some posts with similar symptoms turn out to be toque converter issues but given yours is a 2016 (and the posts were mostly D3s and I think the TC was uprated for the D4) I'd imagine that is unlikely. Other things I've seen suggested on similar posts are gearbox mounts, transfer box calibration, leak or loose on exhaust downpipe.

Whatever rpm its at when it starts around 70mph, can you replicate it at same engine speed but different road speed?

Diagnostics with an Iid tool using live values would eliminate many causes and is the only way to go. Thumbs Up
Have you checked all the brakes for overheating?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I have pointed out to the dealer that the left exhaust bank (viewed from the rear) vibrates whereas the right doesn't. It's not hitting anything but obviously something is causing an imbalance.

I need to check the RPM @70mph

@M3DPO As you say I'm sure the IID tool would help, if only I knew what i was looking for. All the gear & no idea springs to mind! Smile

I don't think it's the brakes, as i've not noticed any overheating, binding or vibration under braking

Been & spent an hour or so with the technician road testing it.

There is no heat build up in the brakes. Thoughts are that it could be the rear diff.....

I had vibration/rumble issues that were checked over time and time again. As always it never happened when the garage had it!
Eventually found out to be warped discs which were replaced under warranty as had only been on 6 months

Did the technician say anything about the vibrating left exhaust bank?

It wasn't really explored in the basis that the exhaust is joined at the mid point so it wasn't thought it was representative of a engine issue.

The technician felt the noise was from the rear of the car. Being the passenger he had the ability to move around to try & locate the source.

First port of call in the new year will be the rear diff area. As they said, it's logical that the noise could be there under load, then stop when the load stops when the car is coasting.

The more I explore this the more it seems to be a load related noise, rather than speed. If I escelerate hard from a low speed it's apparent as it is once reaching cruising speed which I guess requires more effort to maintain given the size & shape of the D4

It would be interesting to see if I can replicate it at low speed under load with a trailer.

I still haven't got to the bottom of this issue. The car at been back & forth to the dealer a number of times & still the problem exists, in fact its more noticeable now given that other issues have been sorted.

As a recap, There is a drone, vibration that appears in the vehicle that appears either under hard acceleration or at high motorway speeds. Rather than a physical feeling through the car it's more of an acoustic drone. My son described it well as though someone has turned a subwoofer on & it's rumbling like at the cinema. If I take my foot off the throttle it stops & the ride is smooth as butter, hit the throttle & it returns.

I've had the following done,
4 wheel alignment
4 wheel road force balance & pairing
Engine mount replaced (apparently it was leaking)
Rear prop replaced (centre bearing had failed)
Both front lower arm read bushes replaced
new from discs & pads (checked caliper sliders for seizing)

I think it's coming from the engine or drive train somewhere, but can't find any other clues. Pottering around town, the car is fine & nothing appears out of sorts.

The garage don't seem to recognise the issue, perhaps its normal, The only reference I have is my old D3 which would purr along all day at 85 or so given the chance, whereas the D4 is not a nice place to be at similar speeds.

Any suggestions or ideas? After 12month of ownership I'm now getting to the point where I'm considering moving it on if I can't resolve this as I'm not enjoying the car & avoid driving it in favour of our other car which is a shame to see it sat ignored on the drive.

Possible transmission, I had a something similar - a dose of Dr Tranny fixed it for me...

Wheel bearing? I would associate a rumble with an early bearing failure - Had a similar thing on my dad's Lexus

I don't think you can read the injector values on a D4. Not with an IID anyway.

I guess you can rule out the engine by revving it up to motorway speeds and seeing if you get any vibration?

If not, its driveline. Did you have a decent new propshaft put on? If its speed related, how are your tyres? Do you get anything if using low range?

Thanks for the replies.
So I did wonder about the injectors at rev but no idea how to check them with the IID. Tyres are all in good order with at least 6mm tread & have balanced up well. The prop is a LR OEM fitted by the dealer. Not messed with low range but might take a butcher at the weekend.
i don't think it's wheel bearing but will double check to not to dismiss it., The gearbox had a full flush not long after I bought it, which made no difference, so I'm not sure Dr Tranny will make much difference.
No fault codes from the IID with the exception of a re occurring comms message about headlight control or sumat.

Wheel bearing noise will change in a bend.
Diffs less so, if at all.

I think diffs.
