D4 gearbox fault invalid data

I previously posted a quick message regarding my D4 having a gearbox fault, but I haven t had any replies, which I think may be down to the vagueness of my query. So with that in mind, I will post a comprehensive post regarding the woes of my D4 even though I still love this car.

The story...
This was all during the snowy March we have just had.
Parked up in a shopping centre, went to drive off, gearbox mil on and stuck in park. Turmed ign off and then car wouldn t start. Dad came and jump started car, fault gone.I have gap IID BT tool at home which told me invalid data from TCM at transfer case and same fault at Parking brake.Cleared codes and no problems for the next 700 miles.
Then parked up in car wash, gearbox fault comes on, and once again stuck in park. Got ipad out, cleared codes, all was fine again but only for 300 miles this time.
Last time, it happened, again it was snowing, but fault came on whilst driving children to school, so i cleared codes and got home, but now the 2 faults remain on and can t be cleared:-

U0402 invalid data from tcm at transfer case
u0402 invalid data from tcm ar oarking brake.

This problem only began days after having belts changed at respected indy LR specialist in North West.
It had been trouble free and wonderful up until now.

These two faults have grounded the car for the last 6 weeks.
It needed discs and a new brake actuator (it was screaming on occasion) so we took it to our mechanic in limp home mode. He has done all work on the brakes, but couldn t figure out what was up with transmission.

Thing I have tried.....

After scouring the internet and in particular this exceptional site, I have tried the following:-

Brand new battery (old one seemed okay and charged okay but when I took it to battery man it didn t have a great crank in it)
Changed brake switch :- all brake lights where working and there is 12v at the pedal.
Checked all grounds on tcm circuit.
There is 12v at tcm, tccm, gearbox selector, all terrain switch etc.
Only 9 volts and 5 volts at transfer case, but on the electrical diagram it only says supply voltage at transfer case, not battery vcoltage, so I am assuming that is correct?
Checked network integrity on Canbus H and L at the OBD socket and got 60 Ohms, between pin 6 and 14.
Checked grounds underneath wheel arch liners.

Live values all working on gap tool except transmission. I can get steering angle, all engine values, height values etc, but no transmission values ( solenoid states etc)
On gap tool, car thinks it in neutral, when it should be in park. Car has to be forced to shut down as it tells me its not in park.

If anybody has had the time to read my saga, and has any advice that would be greatly appreciated. I am really missing my D4 and it breaks my heart to walk past it in the morning and get in my mums Corsa to do the school run!!

Many Thanks for your time

Jane

Hi guys.

After trawling every forum available , still didn't get any further with this. After such an overwhelming response on Disco4.com, I have finally got to the bottom of this issue. If anyone needs the final outcome let me know, but I am guessing its a problem that nobody has ever seen before, or maybe nobody cares.

many thanks

Hey Kajtzu

Short answer :- Transmission Control Module

For a boring and long winded answer please see below lol

Could only get invalid data codes, and as it happened in the snow I was sure it was something and nothing and hopefully just a cable or something.
The brilliant people at GAP helped me get a more specific diagnosis using the pending tests on the fault test for the GAP IID tool. I had a bit more to go on, and the LR literature said its either TCM, or wiring to the TCM.

Everything tried to tell me it was TCM inside gearbox or wiring associated.
I tried every earth, canbus integrity, numbers at the TCM connector and all was apparently okay.

I got the brilliant Preston Automatic to change the TCM inside the gearbox, then bought the fastrack flash file to reprogramme the new TCM in the gearbox. (Pat at GAP was priceless and very patient with me whilst I tried to flash the gearbox on site)

The car was off the road for nearly 2 months and I feared if it went into a dealers they would just keep swapping things and charging me. i needed a definite answer and the people at GAP sorted it.

Success. £800 for full mechtronic unit with TCM, £400 change and gearbox service, £25 for the new gearbox file from GAP.

Was told it was a £3000 job at a dealer, but manage to get back on the road for £1225, which is probably the amount of diesel I saved whilst it was off the road for 2 months.

P.S......

If you buy a Discovery, but the GAP tool. I am fairly certain it will always pay for itself. I bought mine just to play with CCF files and turn on xenon headlights etc. Didn t realise just how much it would help further down the line. The tool can reprogramme a new, used or reconditioned gearbox and I cannot speak highly enough of the people from GAP who helped so much.

Nice to hear you got it fixed Very Happy

Agreed on IID, it’s the second best “mod” for the discovery - the first one is D4 cup holders to a D3 Thumbs Up (Pat and the others at GAP helped me determine my D4 at the time had doctored mileage)
