Just had the dreaded cloud of white smoke as I gave it a bootful to accelerate out of the way of muppets on the motorway this morning.
Quite spectacular and fear inducing when you don't know what it is!!!
Fortunatley local specialist is going to sort the mod on Monday for me as knew straightaway what it would be.

Going to LR dealer next tuesday because of heavy smoke during acceleration on highway. Guy at dealers didn't knew anything about secondary turbo drain problems on these engines.

Thank you so much for this post. My LR4 had been getting progressively worse, to such a point that when I did give it some beans the car behind just disappeared in the something akin to Stars in Their Eyes. I had a go myself at the mod, but for some reason, couldn't get the starter motor out. anyway my local LR specialist sorted it out during a service and I haven't seen a puff since. I was ready for selling until I saw this, so thank you, the love affair continues!

Fantastic write up. Had the above issue to the point that you literally could not see anyone across 4 lanes (albeit fun on the morning run). Embarassing never the less. Had the mod done last week, LR is spot on now, not even a hint of smoke!

Thanks for this - I have the same issues I think - Would you have attempted this without a 4 post lift? Do you think its doable on a drive using ramps etc?

I believe the original post was by someone who did it on the floor. I had my mate do it while I stood and watched. Cant see why it couldn't be done on a drive, however it looked easier on the ramp due to access.

I did it on the ground at access height (or maybe on stands, can’t remember). Wasn’t hard at all.

LR Job time is 1.2Hr. However if its the first time you've done it it will take a lot longer as you will be looking for things and working out how to slide stuff out etc.. Go for genuine parts. I paid £75 all in for them from Auto Post. Also refer to the photos taken as well as the LR bulletin as some bits aren't obvious at first. What area are you?

Im in North West - I am happy giving it a go, if its doable on a driveway with basic tools. What I didn't want to find is that it needed to be on a lift...
(I have previously done lower arms, brakes, drive shaft so not a complete beginner)

I’d leave yourself three hours to do it and then you won’t have any surprises. The starters removal was quite fiddly for me.

Think that was the most fiddly part to be fair! I was lucky rhe terminals were not curved so didn't have to try and leave a 8mm gap, ive got the modded square ones that only for 1 way. Still awkward. Don't forget to get new oil and filter.
