D4 seized engine

My 23 month old 41,000 mile D4 is currently at the dealers having a new engine and turbo fitted because the original engine seized as I was travelling up the dual carriageway last week.

Has anyone else heard of any problems with the 3 litre TDV6? It has been serviced on the dot and the engine oil was upto the correct level. The dealer says there was a lot of swarf and debris in the oil but they don't strip it down, they just return to the manufacturer. It's a shame because the vehicle had been faultess until then.

The thing that suprised me was that when the Landrover Assist man came out I expected him to say it could be a faulty electrics or something but the first thing he said was that he thought the engine might be seized. This makes me wonder whether the 3 litre TDV6 is a bit prone to this?

Enterprise supplied me with a 1500 mile HSE on the same day as the breakdown so I am being looked after well enough but I'm not sure how long mine is going to be out of action for.

Check what oil your servicing dealer is useing .

I found that when i went to get some top up oil from a dealer they told me it was the same oil as the d3 ( they use the same oil for both ) ....which its obviously not Sad

I've had three franchised dealers tell me the same thing!!!
Looks like they may have a problem?

In the end I had to go to a Jaguar dealer to get the right oil and they advised strongly against using the D3 oil in this engine.

Don't know how to ensure I get the right oil at the first service due in a couple of months?

D3 spec 5w/30 - WSS-M2C913-B
D4 spec 5w/30 - WSS-M2C934-B

D4 one is a low ash oil ..something to do with the DP filter

On that basis, you wouldn't think that the wrong oil would have resulted in hc76's seized engine? Wouldn't it just effect the DPF and CAT? I've heard of a couple of D3's that have seized but can't remember a D4 that's gone bang before. Sorry to hear of your problems.

No idea ...without looking into the oil specs properly .

Im not saying its the oil thats caused it ...but they recomend a particular oil for the 3 litre engine for a reason .

I would be also concerened about the lack of no dipstick ...and the oil level being reliant on an electronic switch . Shocked

Even a basic diesel engine i deal with at work has a minimum of 2 oil sensors (pressure and level )

It could just be a component failure in the engine ...but i doubt we will ever find out if its being shipped back without taking a peek first .

Any oil is better than no oil, but if the main dealer is using the wrong spec then they should be told, it's amazing how they get it wrong.
We need a full spec sheet for the oil...

Not good for the end user, its these sort of problems that let down the good name of Land Rover..

Flack Thumbs Up

Have to say this....

An electronic oil level sensor is a sensor too far....as it can fail + if it fails & shows a level when you havent actually got one....damaged or compromised engine.
A dip stick onthe other hand is a "fundamental instrument" it doesnt need calibrating & cant fail...OK it can be ignored but that would go with general neglect of a vehicle by the user.

I just wonder of those of us on here - how often they check:
Oil Level ?
Other engine bay fluid levels ?
Tyre pressures ?
Bulbs at the back ?
...mine are done every week...old fashioned but I'm sure all is ok with user maintenance

Question:
Has the D4 got a lights out / bulb failure sensor ?...I know the D3 hasnt
Even some quite basic cars have these...& not new technology...my Volvo 240 had one of these as standard
In my opinion just as if not more important as an oil level sensor.....

My last VW Golf dropped all its oil (a falulty filter seal so they said)...what I got was huge warning light & a constant warning gong...far better than a engine oil pressure "light"
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

You would get shot in the military, ALL of these should be part of your DAILY vehicle inspection BEFORE setting off Wink

Oil and screen wash etc, weekly for me. I have never had to add any oil to my current D3, last one used 1L per 15k.

Tyre pressures I do check weekly too.
Brake fluid - I never look Shocked
