My D4; should it stay or should it go?

I guess more than a few on here have pondered this question so I'd be grateful for your views.

My D4 has done just 78,000 miles and is exactly 11 years old on Friday. I've had it since new and carefully looked after it - everything that needs doing is done, FSH by main dealers or LR specialists. I've never had a car this long - my D3 was 7 or 8 years old when I sold it - still going strong I see from the MoT history.

I've just had it serviced and MoT'd - first time pass with no advisories as for the past few years.

Stay

Known. Reliable - to date - only once not got to where I was going. Nothing really can replace it for motorway cruising and off road ability. What was v high depreciation has levelled out, although I guess I wouldn't get much more than £12-13K for it. Comfortable, fast and that grin factor.

Go

Maintenance and running costs. Worry of a very large bill/breakdown at some time in the future. Reliability - which concerns me more than anything else. I don't need the load carrying (kids grown up) or off road ability (EE upgraded at some expense the track to my cottage) as I used to. ULEZ expansion.

I'd appreciate your views. Thanks.

All valid comments but the key is - what would replace it?

Only when a suitable replacement is in mind can a comparison/ comment be made either way.....

But yes... I shared in your concerns about something big going (turbos/crank shaft).... and it was part reason I sold mine.
A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

sharing same concerns as you i decided to stay as replacement even to ugly D5 is too economically unpractical

with pain of paying for Warranty Direct I have saved at least 4 plus K in last two years on jobs

besides I am emotinally attached to ours Wink

good luck with decisins

I went to RRS, same perceived problems of reliability and insurance costs increasingly becoming an issue but what else is there?

I have a 9 year old d4 with 136k that is well serviced and maintained. You are many miles behind but with a similar ethos to me regarding vehicle care. What’s the worry?

My good friend traded in his 7 year old Audi Q7 with similar fears to you. His replacement A6 (new) is causing him no end of issues whilst his now 8 year old Q7 still plies the North Highlands without a glitch.

If you like the car, keep it. If you don’t, trade it!!

I'm having a similar conundrum. I've spent quite a lot keeping the car fixed etc over the years with the suspension compressor, the alternators this that and some of the other, but now I'm getting issues with the secondary turbo and I can't decide whether to put on hard standing, spend some money on an IID and some parts and fix it, or let it go and give someone else the opportunity to get a D4 as a doer upper.

Thanks for your views.

I'm going to test drive a few possible contenders. I'll start at the bottom with a Dacia Duster which may end any doubts I have about my D4!

I went from a d4 2012 to RR sport 2016 v8 shape and then went back to a d4 2016.

I am dreading having to change again. As cannot find anything as practical and nice.

Don't get me wrong the RR sport was great. Excellent engine. Better mpg nice ride. Just didn't find as comfortable. Not as much boot space. Seats didn't fold flat. And more expensive to maintain.

I went from a D4 to XC90 to new Defender. I'm now looking at D4s again Confused

I bought my daughter a D3 recently for her gap year trip, when she finishes her A Levels. I love driving it when I'm allowed. The tailgate is just so useful. It's whats driving me back to a D4. The D5 just doesn't cut it and the Defender is underwhelming and the boot is tiny and side opening door a pain. The XC90 was great and if I'd have been sensible I'd have kept it. Rolling Eyes

Same situation here, 2016 D4 Landmark with 65k miles, owned since new and a big service looming in the summer. I feel I should change as I’ve not had a car over 5 years old for a long time but I just can’t see anything that ticks all the boxes other than better economy and arguably perceived reliability.

We need it to tow a large ti tent, carry lots of stuff, be wonderful to drive, carry 7 large people from time to time and be nice to look at out the window.

Looks like I’ll be spending a few bob on it and hanging on to it with a decent warranty 🤔
