Would these D4's be a good investment

I keep being drawn to these ex highways traffic officer D4's & wonder if they would be a good investment

https://www.xpolicecarcentre.co.uk/used-ca...eType=cars

They are cheap, but tatty. Probably well maintained. I keep telling myself it's OK as a working car, but not as the family runaround, I'd end up spending to much trying to make in an HSE like I'm used too.

Thoughts?

They seem reasonable prices considering an 05 D3 with 150,000 can be around £5K

Two things worth considering I think
One the paint work could be patchy where the stickers have been removed

Two the dash may have a few holes and the rest of the vehicles where lights have been removed

That said - they are probably well maintained

Quick answer - no.

A lot of different drivers, driven at extremes, idling for hours and as mentioned, holes in the dash and cubbyhole, roof, shadow marks where stickers have been, worn seats plus I believe there is a Police spec, which is a stand alone basic etc. etc. I wouldn’t even say they would necessarily be well maintained, they won’t be main dealer maintained, more Police garage maintained and their mechanics are a jack of all trades.

I'd contact Bleeding Knuckles on here he is a traffic officer and used to drive them so he's probably the best person to give you the low down on them.

If it’s ex HATO, I would expect them to be dealer maintained ( not sure if that’s good or bad though, depends on the dealer) unless things have changed but four years ago there were, there is a thread on here regarding it.

Value for money? Probably. I guess most of the miles will have been motorway. They won't be the poshest D4 in the car park and they will have some issues as mentioned, such as holes drilled in the dash and suchlike. You might have to factor in some money for replacement parts too, suspension and suchlike, although with luck, things will be good.

But for the price, assuming you are happy with the vehicle you are getting and aren't after a pristine top of the range Disco, I'd have one. The up side is, for that price, you are getting a Disco 4 around a couple of years younger than you would otherwise.

A bit of a gamble, sure, but let's be honest, that's what you generally get with a Land Rover anyway.

It being an ex fleet vehicle with many drivers and very few of them care about the car in the slightest bit, it is simply a tool to do a job.

On the plus side, have you ever seen one get above 50mph?

Lots of idling is very bad for any diesel engine, terminal in some cases.
