D5 - where's it being made? |
|
Greetings all....
As a long time lurker on this site, and a devoted Disco 3 & RRS owner, I've been waiting for the arrival of the new D5 for some time. Having seen it in the flesh I'm not 100% yet, so I was waiting for the new Ingenium 3 litre diesel to see how that drives before I make a decision. One thing that is important to me - not to everyone on this forum I appreciate - is where the car is built, and I was under the impression they were to be built in Solihull. However, I've seen reports in the press that the new Slovakian plant is to build the D5, and my stealer thinks that they will be built in Solihull for the UK market, but Slovakia for the RoW.
What do others think / know? It doesn't make sense to me for the UK only to build for the UK market given the total annual D5 volumes, or does the flexible manufacturing allow for D5s to be built along with FFRRs and RRs and to make this cost effective. Could they start production in Solihull, and then shift it all to Slovakia when the factory comes on line?
All opinions / thoughts / theories appreciated........
Phil

At present ( from what I saw on the factory visit last month at Solihull) the production line is for multi model vehicle assembly. Presumably they'll come through in batches RRS, D5, and whatever else. Both LHD and RHD vehicles were coming along the line. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

All New Discovery will be built at Solihull.
The Slovakia plant is currently being built and is due to start production in late 2018 according to the press release.

No they don't go through in batches they mix snd match. When we were there for the launch there were D5s RRS FFRR and long wheel base all on the line together and all mixed up some LHD and some RHD. Impressive stuff MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

It would certainly be a great idea for the D5 to also be assembled at the Slovakian plant, in order to up total numbers not only for the UK but also for the RoW. It should also make it possible to sell the vehicles cheaper too.... 2016 Discovery 4 Commercial
