I got one for Christmas and have used it with great success on my own car for applying wax and on a friends car to refresh the poor paint on his.
They are easy to use but a bit scary to start with. Make sure you mask up all plastic trim to protect it and stop polish slater on it.
Wash, clay and clean the car before you start, start on one panel and go in a grid type pattern, up and down across the panel then left and right across the panel if that makes sense, some good videos on youtube.
Cannot remeber what polish I use off hand as am at work, but use the Sonus pads and have found them very good, finished off with Autoglym wax and jet seal 109 and very impressed with the results, especially on friends car which was in a very poor state. In actual fact my lad did most of that and he had no issues with the polisher.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

As others have said, spend some time reading on detailing world but try not to take everything too seriously, a lot of those people are doing it for paying customers! When I bought my R32 I got into it in a big way and spent over £1000 in 8 months buying equipment/products, I took everything to heart and tried to do it all by the book and the result was 3 days later I still hadn't finished a Golf!
It's not by any means a quick process but I over did everything!!
Basically you'll want to strip the car of any existing wax/sealants with an APC(all purpose cleaner) or fairy washing up liquid, remove any tar with a dedicated tar remover, clay bar it to remove bonded contaminants, then start your paint correction stages with your choice of DA, pads and polish. Shinning a light onto your car then looking into it will help show up the defects as in my first picture earlier.
Then Its on to protecting your paint work with whatever you choose, it could be wax or a sealant or sometimes both. Some glazes/polishes contain filling agents so they help to mask some of the defects for you, but in my opinion thats cutting corners! Personally I use Zaino sealants, they are my favourite and are extremely easy to use with great results.
If your old car doesn't have clear coat on the paint then you will need to check the products you buy are suitable for this. Also a PTG(paint thickness gauge) is a good idea so you know how much material your safe to take off, or that your not polishing a panel that hardly has any paint on!
Then theres your trim restorers, tyre glaze, glass cleaners and the likes but they are all down to your personal choice! Thats not the ins and outs of it but it gives you bit of an idea

I tried one of the clay bar mits which is a bit like a washing glove but covered in a kind of rubber. keep it wet and wipe the whole car down and despite it just being thoroughly washed, you can feel the crap being wiped off.
Is a very good alternative to traditional clay barinmg.

I've also got the clay mit and I'm impressed! If you go over an area with the clay bar after you do get more contaminants off but the mit gets 95% off in my opinion, and is so much faster!

Have you been to the cleanyourcar.co.uk website, I have found it very usedfull, plus Ive had great service from them.
I have a DAS6 polisher and I have decided to stick to the Maguires product range and Im using the two pack system, specific pads for compounds and polishes.
Im no expert , but Im starting to teach myself how to clean, buff etc using snowfoam, waffle cloths, buffing and sealants etc etc.
