Dead Disco! :(
So my Disco 3 2.7 TD6 wouldn’t start last Friday and I had to have it recovered to the garage.
Not got a full answer as to what’s wrong yet but its been suggested a chain on one bank may have slipped / broken.
Guessing that leads to bent valves and damaged pistons.
Quick answer was it might be a write off.... BUT surely not!
Anyone had to do a top end strip down and rebuild and know how hard it is?
I used to work on my old cars (escorts, my 1 and 2 etc) but since all the computers were added i stopped and paid!
When were the belts last changed & at what mileage?
Have you updated the oil pump ?

So was I.
Mileage is 154000
Not had the car long but was told it was serviced only a few weeks months before i got it. Looking at the oil i think not! I was planning on having it serviced at the end of this month.
Apart from that i have no other appear work on it’s services.
So the Belts and oil pump questions I can’t answer!
I'm particularly concerned about the lack of service history. It might be worth "chasing" the vendor for copies of invoices & the stamped service history before they are aware of your problems.
Did you buy the car privately, or through a trader/dealer? If the latter depending on the timescale & terms of the sale you may have recourse to the vendor.

To be honest it was a private sale and i checked everything i could before I bought it.
I did research and chatted with a couple of owners before I started.
I even plugged in a code reader (iCarsoft LR2) and there were no codes before or after the test drive.
There is no manuals or anything that came with it just a verbal , it’s been regularly serviced...

If its the passenger side, its a right pain.
Drivers side is ok.
fit a second hand head ~£100 ebay
new chain £60?
bolts £25
gaskets £100+
Have a few hours fun stipping the fuelling off to remove the cam cover and see if its broke.
If your not paying labour, its worth a go repairing on the cheap and see what happens

Thanks Pete,
I’m comfortable that i can do all the work - it’s only really pistons and valves in the end (yes i know there are more complications to think about) but the only concern is is the valves have damaged the Pistons themselves. If not it should be complications off, cover off, head off, Strip down and rebuild head and put it back together.
It is the passenger bank I believe - I’m off in to the garage on Friday to have a chat.
HOPEFULLY at that point they will tell me they have done some more checks and they were wrong and it’s just a 2 hour job to fully fix! BUT i doubt that!

Fingers crossed its not that bad. Consider also getting a second opinion. It will cost some transport and a hour or so of labour but if its something really simple you'll save a fortune in time. I was once told on a previous land rover that the metal "bang" I had when stopping hard was my transfer box and quoted several hundreds to replace. Took it down the road and another indie found it to be a lose back box hitting the frame! £50 for a new back box and £40 for labour.

dont think it hasnt been serviced by just looking at the oil. Even a drive down the road with new oil will be black when you get back. and its viscosity is like water anyway.

no point having a second opinion if your good with spanners.
Passenger head isn't nice to remove and refit to to the rear belt, and belt cover,
I think the head will be knackered. Waste of time reusing.

That's a result. Great news.Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.
