debris in oil filter

Hmmm i opened the oil filter from my TDV6 D3 this afternoon..

and found this..

as i am rather new to this specific land rover model, is it possible to change the big-end shells without a body off?

i know, the debris can be from anywere in the engine, but there is a "knock" in the engine since 4 miles.
also one of the injectors is restricted, i was "hoping" that the injector was causing the knock, but maybe the damage is bigger... (can be both)

i had it before in another car, faulty o-ring or bad replaced o-ring caused a oils shortage for a few miles, changing the shells solved and rescued the engine then.. but on that car we had easy access to them..

can it be checked and done with the engine still in?

thanks in advance for an answer..
 Best regards
Harold

I think this guy changed shells body on

you have to take the fan and fan plastic surround off
belt tensioner and bracket off

To slide the bottom of the engine off and up

It is mainly soft metal...... almost nothing of the debris does get attracted by a strong magnet....

Aren't the stank bearings bronze so non ferrous?

It will depend on whether any bearings have spun, if so crank may need attention

How long has the oil and filter been in there?

I would be thinking a 2nd hand engine may be your safest option.

If its soft metal its going to be bearings.

At the moment the engine is salvagable so i would be pulling the engine and rebuilding. If you continue to let it run and spin a bearing you will be looking at 1.5k for a donnor engine.
There is a lot of labour involved but parts costs should be low if you are able to reuse your own engine parts.

With bearings that bad you are looking at a crank regrind, i would also be looking for a reason for the wear.
No wonder the noise was still there!

I do not know.... since I bought this motor 100miles ago, did run fine on some test drives (it is not licensed in NL yet, still on foreign plates) and 4 miles ago it started knocking... just after I blanked the egr.... there should be no connection between that work and a crankshaft..

Thanks for your input guys!

We do rebuilding (motorcycle) engines for a living. So I know my way around inside an engine.
BUT as said, new to this specific Land Rover (D3) That is why I wanted to know what you can do / check on the engine without a body off procedure....

If the crank itself needs attention, I will opt for a spare engine I think, so it will need to come out and I know what to do, but if the crank is still ok, and “only” the big-end shells need replacement, well that would save a lot of time and effort....
 Best regards
Harold

What about the main shells?- you cannot change those without the engine out. It all depends on what your intentions are with it, if keeping it any length of time do the job properly. I think the seller made a good decision Whistle

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
