Decisions decisions...
Hi - new potential Discovery owner here in search of advice/experience.
I've pretty much made the decision to get a D4, moving on from a Volvo XC60 which I've had for a couple of years. I've not got a settlement figure from the finance company yet, but with payments, deposit etc I think it could have cost me c£20k over two years (although obviously some of that is interest, so call it £15k cash) - so the slower depreciation on a Discovery is one of the many things that attracts me.
I know it's an oft repeated question on here, but I'm trying to get my head round the XS vs HSE debate from a depreciation point of view. I don't need/want some of the HSE things (sunroof, mood lighting etc) but I definitely want metalllic paint (£600). I'd also want electric seat/armrests (£800) and probably the xenon lights (£700 - ironically more because I want the high beam assistant and I like the LEDs). I'm undecided about the reversing camera - had one on a jag, don't have it on the Volvo and not sure I miss it - I don't tow anything. And I quite like keyless entry but probably not £800-worth. There's a couple of extras I'd probably put on either (towbar for carrying bikes and privacy glass).
So - to get everything I want that's XS specific costs about £2k, the "quite like" options add another £1100. That means at list price £4000 or so extra for the HSE - easy decision... BUT - will I be able to narrow that differential through a discount from the dealer? If they (say) drop both list prices by 6% that's £500 or so of the differential gone. The question then is do I lose more on the specced up XS than the "standard" HSE over a couple of years?
Any thoughts?
Cheers.

I went through the same thought process but my answer came up as HSE. I didn't need a whole bunch of stuff on the HSE but when I added things I wanted the price crept back towards HSE territory. The only factory extras I have gone for are privacy glass, remote climate and heated steering wheel.
As you get little resale value on options I went for the HSE as some people still buy 2nd hand cars on the badge alone.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Good point re the badge (which I'd sort of gleaned from reading the forum - HSE seems to slightly have the edge over the XS on popularity). However trying to do this just on the cold hard facts I'm still seeing £4k extra for the HSE - the question is over 2 or 3 years do I get that back in reduced depreciation?
Is there a table of expected depreciation %s of the various models anywhere?
Also a couple of other questions:
Best time of year to buy? Summer, I guess?
And any recommendations for god dealerships in north/west yorks? I've been talking to the guys in Ripon so far, but I'm aware there's Farnells in Guiseley and presumably others in Harrogate/York etc.
Thanks - great forum!

I've got the Landmark which sits in between the XS and HSE.
Trouble is its not an ongoing model, can't be ordered to spec and its limited to just three colours.
But it has the electric seats, armrest & LEDs as std.
Spec is ideal for me as I didn't need all the bits that you pay for on the HSE.
Ref dealers, bought my D3 new from Armstrong Massey in York and totally useless that I vowed never to use them again.
Moved my service business to Ripon Land Rover an received exceptional service from them.
So when it came to buy the D4 I bought it from them .... but again totally useless and definitely won't buy here again.
But servicing second to none at RLR as I have a great relationship with Peter the service manager who personally oversees work on my D4 with a specific team of mechanics ( whom I've met and who know me).
Don't know anything about Farnells in Guisley, but there's always Hillendale in Nelson to consider.
Welcome to the site btw I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Thanks Ron - the Landmark looks great - but not available now, i don't think?
Didn't realise there was a LR dealer in Nelson - will check them out.
Could you maybe drop me with a PM some time telling me what RLR did on the sales side?
Cheers

Will do ...... once I calm down from re-living the experience.
Btw, you do know there's a LR Experience centre at Coniston Hall Hotel ???
I'd blag a half day there FOC from your prospective dealer before committing to any purchase.
Lets you see exactly what they're capable of
(The D4 that is .... not the dealer )

Thanks dave - good tips. I did something similar when I got my Volvo which meant the local chap sharpened his pencil by about an extra three grand when I shopped around.

Don't forget that if you buy a car which already has extras included in the OTR price you will get more back for those accessories when you sell it second hand than if you up-spec a baser model.
I put nearly £10,000 of extras on my last X3 and got maybe an extra £700 on a private sale. Whereas the D4 had a large amount of extras INCLUDED in the base price that I would have paid thousands for when speccing up a new X5 (eg 3rd row seats-£2100 on the X5!!!)
Mind you bl dy glad I DID get a D4 and not the X5. If it don't fit the third time - try a bigger hammer

That's sort of my thinking, Dinsdale - I'll be paying c£3k for extras that I won't get back, whereas the "starting price" for the HSE when trading in will be a few grand higher than the XS. My dilemma is I don't know how much higher!

Look at the dealers for 2nd user prices
A 1 year old (8sp) XS is about £40k. A similar priced HSE is the old 6 speed D4 HSE - Aintree Green
D4 Orkney my13 - gone
Stornaway D4. Gone, Didn't like it at all
D3 silver manual. Loved my first LR

Interesting - just searched for 20-25k, up to 2 year old XS and HSE (about when I'd change mine if I bought one). Seems the XS is going for £34-36k, HSE for £39-42k - which would suggest that come sale time you get slightly more than your money back...
Good tip - thanks - the approved vehicle locator makes that really easy!
