Reminds me of when I bought my D3. First drive was from garage in Bradford up to my parents in Newcastle for tea, then home down to Salisbury. Good job I liked it ( and still do! )

I recently travelled from north Aberdeenshire down to Poole in Dorset to collect my D4 commercial, certainly a lot more complicated than the journey you are considering but well worth the effort as I noticed a bulge on a front tyre that was change there and then by the dealer as I wouldn’t take the car without it being done.
The most expensive part of the whole trip was the taxi from my house to the airport ! The journey was taxi, flight, Uber, train, lift… drive back The drive back was a good time to get the feel of the car and to listen for any odd noises etc (there weren’t any). The whole trip was accomplished in one (very long) day, so your sons trip from BHX to EDI and back should be a doddle although a pair of lightweight ear plugs would be advised I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Dundee to MK and back for the G4 in a single day
Despite a flight delayed by 2 hours, and a delayed train
And the fraud squad delaying things for another hour (mustn't grumble about that one, I suppose )
Easily do-able My D3 Build Thread

Make an adventure out of it.
Don't try to do it all in one day. Drive up with an early start and leave time for a nice evening. On the way up, or on the way back, identify a place or two to visit to break the journey. If you have a hobby, call at a golf shop or gun shop or whatever that you wouldn't normally visit because you are never up that way. Stop overnight somewhere out of the city and you'll likely get a twin room at a chain hotel for around £50.
I guess what I mean is ensure the journey is part of the good experience, not just buying the jalopy.
