There is a company that supplies them (Daqua) just up the road from me, I'll need to pay them a visit.

You do have to ditch the aquagleam at the end of its life, but they continue to work for a long time after the colour or the resin has changed (supposedly indicating its worn out). I connect two small ones together, water goes through the old, supposedly worn out one first, then into the newer one. This massively extends the life of the newer one. Periodically I then throw the older one away, use the newer one as the replacement for the old one, running it into a brand new one. Cycling two cartridges like this seems to give much more life out of them.

I clean two cars at least every fortnight and usually buy two replacement cartridges a year. Our water isn't massively hard but if you don't rinse with the treated water (or dry if you've the time and inclination) the cars do look awful with the white water marks all over them.

Aquagleam is quite possibly a more expensive way of doing it over the suggestion in the OP, but it's simpler because you just order the cartridges which come with hozelock connectors already installed and away you go.
