Think, hmm. Into neutral, low range is selected, suspension goes into off road height and mud and ruts is selected in the Terrain Response. That should see me out and on my way to food and tv..
Nope, the more i go forward, the more i slide to the left. Baws. Try one last attempt to break free, slide properly into the ditch, car realises it's bottomed out on the chassis and goes into extended mode. Still bottomed out on ditch side wall and going no where.
Mud and ruts assumes all wheels are on loose ground. Putting it in offroad height when two wheels have no support tilts the weight further onto the unsupported side. Best bet is standard height, rock crawl and reverse, initially on full left lock to try and get the front on firmer ground, then straight back before easing right.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Picture 1, shows that the front right wheel has been spinning a bit trying to gain grip from the loose gravel/dirt at the side. There is nothing similar at the back right.
Picture 2 shows i managed to reverse back a couple of feet as the ditch and the grooves already carved out were taking me further into the ditch.
Would rock crawl have made a difference?
Before it went into extended mode, i had been trying to reverse out as well but wasn't getting any grip.
TC light never once flashed and i never felt it cut in.
Going back up to get a few pictures of the hole and to see how big a mess i made of it all.
Driver error. Next time i'm not moving over, being the kind person gets you nowhere.. In loving memory of FA54WSK.
Rest well old friend, your work is done.

To go along with my desire for a 'lock everything' button another desirable would be an option to select which wheel or wheels gets the drive.
If you knew there was zero grip to a wheel(s) wheels in my ideal world you could press the wheel(s) you want to be driven on the 4x4 display and away you would go.
Would this be technically possible?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Individual locking hubs and diffs would be needed.

Technically, that's what the TC system "should" be doing...
The TC senses a wheel spinning, and so applies the brakes to that wheel, transferring the drive to the wheel with gripMy D3 Build Thread

The problem with TC is it keeps trying to get grip so it will eventually dig a hole.

If it could have locked the 3 diffs, front/centre/rear(where fitted) it possibly could have helped as i bet with the unloaded wheels turning just a little on a loose surface it just dug in more.
Hard lesson to learn that grass verges that slope even a tiny bit are a danger to all of us no matter what vehicle we reside in.
If you hadn't stopped as well it could have been ok as it would have carried the momentum and just flashed up the TC light as the passenger wheels spun while loosing grip.
Get a hose under there and clean it all off and let it dry to see whats what FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

I have noticed in the 3 years that I have had a Discovery, people on a narrow roads just sit there and expect me to drive into ditches,up banks and through hedges to go round them, while they just sit there
As has been said, the car will get caught out one day, neither it,or the driver is infallible "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
