This shows where the front right wheel came to rest once i gave up and went for help. The back wheel was also on it, but there was no sign of it having spun up etc.
Little grip to be found from this stuff as when i kicked it, it all broke apart and went everywhere..

The hole the back wheel ended up in, this has about 6 inches of water in it as well. So sunk very deep into the mud.

You can see where the original channel i dug goes, where i eventually reversed back to and how it got out with the tractor.
A few inches closer to the road would have seen me drive away with no issues.
I had tried slow forwards with wheels pointing to the road.
Reversing with wheels pointing away from the road hoping to be able to swing the nose to the right and onto better ground to gain grip.
Also, took it to local car wash, let them wash it down all over and the underside.
Gearbox crossmember has slight dent and a few deep scratches, front and back arms are ok, sills are ok, side step has a slight bend up. ( as usual with my off road efforts. SCAM member's beware, i'm recruiting 2 of you as jumpers to help straighten it out )
Drives fine and no warning lights etc, so no damage i can see. So just my pride is damaged.

I feel your pain...those stealth verges are a nightmare... Still the right tool for the job to pull you out! My mates defender had the back end up in air every time the weight came on the rope. it was another d3 coming the other way that made me pull over though!

I thought the D3 was meant as a go anywhere machine, a little grass verge causes problems
Just goes to show all these fancy gizmo's can't or won't do what they are meant to.
I'm not too convinced about using mine through the fields as I don't want to be a pain in the
a e for the farmers I do work for by keeping on phoning them to bring the tractor to tow me out.
Will keep using the td5 for now.
Yes I have had that stuck a few times mostly due to towing a loaded trailer through wet muddy fields

I have noticed in the 3 years that I have had a Discovery, people on a narrow roads just sit there and expect me to drive into ditches,up banks and through hedges to go round them, while they just sit there
As has been said, the car will get caught out one day, neither it,or the driver is infallible
How true, how true - even when I've had a long, loaded ' Williams trailer hitched, the on-comer has ignored my clear priority and has jammed themselves into a no-one can move forward position.
Then I though, it - 'you' drove yourself into this jam - you get out of it! I wind up all windows, double check all doors are locked, check the Cell phone is working, and sit, and sit, and sit.
Being high up, I soon see the driver and passengers starting to shout at each other, then other queuers remonstrating with the shouters, much waving of hands, .......

Towing the tin tent the other day down our lane, a woman comes towards me waving her arm for me to move over, onto wet grass with a five feet deep ditch next to it. Bearing in mind the tin tent is 26 feet long with twin axles, did she really think I'd move over to let her drive past in her Fiat. Here in Lincolnshire most of the lanes have quite large grass areas either side of the road except where I was, her side had a 10 feet area of grass but she still refused to drive on it. It was my fault, according to her cursing on the way past when she realised I wasn't going to move.
More and more drivers are being a pain in country lanes, mainly driving too fast around the bends and thinking that they have some god given right that everyone else should move out of their way.
Those pictures of D3's in ditches is rather amusing but at the same time quite annoying because you just know it involved a car coming the other way. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Aye...you are right, people do expect you to move over. I moved over a foot for another d3 and was left with my car well impaled...the guy in the other d3 just drove off! Was not happy.
Even more unreal in your case with a huge tin tent attached! How can you possible expect them to pull into a verge/ditch?

Go to drive out onto the road and the car starts to slide to the left, into a rather deep muddy ditch, which is covered in grass.
Think, hmm. Into neutral, low range is selected, suspension goes into off road height and mud and ruts is selected in the Terrain Response. That should see me out and on my way to food and tv..
Did you remember to do the rather unintuitive - turn off the DSC?
That DSC has a habit of making the car go sideways when you're a little (or much) stuck - I've been caught out twice by it (had to be winched out by a Toyota on one occasion )
So... I did the "two wheels in the ditch" trick today! No photos unfortunately as I couldn't get out of the car.
Met a vehicle coming in the opposite direction on a snow covered single track. Reversed to a point where there was just enough space for us to squeeze past and moved as far right as I could keeping my front wheels pointing left (there are always ditches so was being cautious but I couldn't see one).
The guy got past and I drove slowly forward ... and got sucked into the ditch. The snow moved away revealing some frozen grass which I soon turned into mud!
I could get the thing to go forward a few metres and back a few metres but couldn't pull it back onto the road. Then it got stuck!
The helpful chap who I had let past put some pine branches under the wheels and I managed to reverse out of the muddy part - then with all of J. Clarkson's finesse drove in a straight line through the ditch until I had enough speed and momentum to launch back onto the road - and managed not to end up off the other side as the speed was quite high.
Most of the ditch edge was lined with broken trees so I'll look at the paintwork another day.
What's the official line on getting out of such a situation? The car is on winter tyres (Nokian SUV3s) but I was still (almost) scuppered by a simple small ditch (and lack of talent!).
Cheers
