I posted before about a noise under load and it's got slightly worse and I believed it might be the front diff.. Took it in to my nearest stealer a month ago and the Under Service Manager agreed with me, but the noise was slight and very intermittent, a whine from the front end under load, especially when pulling away when cold or under load, such as uphill. The USM said that there had been occasional problems with the crownwheel and pinion not meshing correctly on some diffs. It seems to do it mainly between 2,000 and 2500 rpm, though that may be just coincidental as the revs I choose when accelerating.
Last week, I took it back to the stealer and the Service Manager proper drove it and it didn't squeak once! However, although I told him it didn't do it just cruising around, that's what he did... The motor made me look a right knob.. Yesterday, I tacked our heavy horse trailer on the back complete with two nags and the whine was very noticeable, especially uphill when pulling hard at about 2500rpm, intermittent under heavy throttle, then disappearing once the load was off. It's the same in high or low range. The Service Managers opinion was that if it was the diff. it would be noisy all the time. So, anyone any ideas what else it could be, although my money is still on the diff. I think I'm going to have to take it back with the trailer on the back.. Still under main warranty until November.. It's a bit awkward, as I can't FORCE them to look at it.. I'll be trying a different LR dealer if no success.Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Strangly enough I thought I had the same problem. Eventually it (on journey up to scotland) I had to stop as it sounded as it the tranmission was about to fall out.
What it was though was the bearings on the belt tensioner, as they were failing the made a 'whining noise'. got this replaced as it eventually failed completely. Hey presto, no more 'whining' noise between 2000 to 3000 revs.
Not sure if it this helps, but it might be the same thing on yours.

I was convinced that my front diff was playing up for the last six months.
It whined when coasting to a standstill....under power and at speed I didn't/couldn't notice anything due to the engine/tyre/wind noise.
It's been back and to whilst they told me it was fine until the last time they admitted it made a slight whining noise. New diff fitted and it's been perfect since then.
I guess that whether the noise is always present will depend on the nature of the fault. Ask them to drain a bit of oil and check for swarf/contamination, although mine came back clean, it still took a new diff to cure the fault.
Good luck,

EdF, which dealer did you take it to, Macrae & Dick Inverness??? If so try Frank Ogg in Elgin, they seem to know what they are doing from my experience.
Yes, but only because I was driving right past! Oggs will be my next call.. My neighbour goes to Oggs (we have an 'R' regd RR, newish 110, 90 TD5 and a D3 between us!) for the usual reasons..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

At Oggs I can run through the problems with Mark, the workshop foreman and get good feedback on what they have found (or not). With M&D I never got anywhere trying to discuss problems.
I thought that at M&D they might have considered doing something if I was sitting in a smoking, oily pile of bits at the side of the road..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Don't understand why.. It sounds further forward than the gearbox.. It's a manual, 33k miles.. Anyone a thought about the turbo..? Would that whine under load and when cold more than when up to temperature? I'll do what DSG suggests and take it to another dealer this week..Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

There are no other symptoms, just the whining, which isn't constant, it mostly comes in short bursts, not constant, and starts and finishes fairly quickly after about 4 or 5 seconds in the stated rev range and the whining is louder if there's more load, such as when towing. If I keep accelerating hard it goes.. I just hope nothing goes terminal with a horse in the trailer on the back.. Recovery may be tricky...Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Im not usre DSL as it was all donme under warranty, but i think in the region of £200, the oild is expensive, and you need to make sure the oil is below 40degress before drainingDuncan
